Diego Pacheco vs. Maciej Sulęcki: Fight Ends with a Brutal Liver Shot KO

The highly rated super middleweight contender Diego Pacheco (22-0, 18 KOs) impressed, defeating Maciej Sulęcki (32-3, 12 KOs) at the Dignity Health Sports Park, Carson, successfully defending his WBC USA and WBO International super middleweight titles. The entire card was promoted by Matchroom Boxing and shown live on DAZN.

In the opening round, Sulęcki closed the distance well. He also landed a smart left on the bell. Pacheco began to have success in the second round, with his jab getting going and the right hand starting to land. The right hand from LA native began to find his Polish opponent – with more regularity over the next couple of rounds.

Sulęcki was punching well between shots from Pacheco in round four and caught the American fighter near the end of the round. Despite that shot, the 23-year-old was having more success with combinations and the big single right hand.

A beautifully timed right hand from Pacheco in round five had Sulęcki in trouble who was grateful to hear the bell after facing a barrage of punches.

In round six, Pacheco landed a stunning left hook liver shot, which sent his opponent to the canvas in agony and unable to beat the count. What a punch from the Renton fighter. A patient performance was rewarded with an impressive knockout win.

Post Fight Quotes

In the post-fight interview, Pacheco was asked how he felt about the win: “I feel great.”

“As a little kid this is what I dreamed of and to be living it right now is amazing. I can’t put into words how I feel,” said Pacheco.

He continued: “Sulecki is a hell of a fighter. He came to fight. He came to win. But he ain’t ran into no one like me before.”

“The body shot, that’s all she wrote,” said Pacheco.

When asked about what he wants next: “Anyone in the top 10.”

He added: “Matchroom brought a few names to the table (for this fight). I said yes to all of them. I never back down from any fight. So, whoever Eddie lines up next I’ll be ready.”

“Spectacular performance; a coming of age performance from a real superstar in the making,” Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn said.

“He’s 23 years old. He’s real good, a young kid with a great heart and Los Angeles is behind him. He’s No. 1 in the world (in the WBO rankings). The world title shot is coming and it’s gonna come very soon.”

Undercard

Eduardo Nunez (27-1, 27 KOs) extended his incredible unbeaten run, defeating the experienced Colombian Miguel Marriaga (31-8, 26 KOs) with Marriaga’s corner calling the fight off at the end of round six. It was a slow start from “Sugar,” but he soon got into his stride landing some heavy shots, with Marriaga having his moments, with single shots and short combinations.

Round four saw Nunez land a left hook to the body and follow that with a huge right hand, nearly knocking Marriaga out of the ring.

The Mexican fighter was largely dominating – when he landed a thudding body shot at the end of round six. Despite making it to the end of the round, the Colombian’s corner decided to withdraw their man from the fight, awarding “Sugar” the KO win in the super featherweight bout.

Arturo Cardenas (15-0-1, 8 KOs) retained the WBC Continental Americas super bantamweight title with a tough win against Jesus Arechiga Valdez (21-2, 15 KOs) via a split decision. The judge’s scorecards read 96-94 for Arechiga, with the remaining two cards for Cardenas 98-92 and 96-94.

Cheavon Clarke (10-0, 7 KOs) won an entertaining cruiserweight clash against the dangerous Efetobor Apochi (12-3, 12 KOs). The judge’s scorecards read 95-95, with the other two 98-92 and 97-93 – giving Clarke the majority decision win.

Ginny Fuchs (4-0, 1 KO) won via split decision against Adelaida Ruiz (16-1-1, 8 KOs) to win the WBC interim super flyweight championship. The judges’ scorecards read 97-93 for Ruiz, with the last two cards reading 100-90 and Fuchs 97-93.

Before the Bell

Alejandro Frias Rodriguez (15-11-2, 7 KOs) scored a big upset, defeating Fabian Rojo (9-1, 7 KOs) by unanimous decision in their welterweight bout, with all three scorecards reading 58-54.

Big-punching bantamweight Alexander Gueche (6-0, 5 KOs) dropped David Vargas Zamora (8-5-2, 5 KOs) in the first round of their clash on the way to a 60-53 win on all scorecards.

Criztec Bazaldua (6-0, 1 KO) comfortably extended his 100% professional record, defeating Kyle Erwin (7-3, 3 KOs) in their super lightweight clash 60-53 on all scorecards.
