Herring ordered to face Roach by WBO
The World Boxing Organization on Friday announced a contest between WBO Jr. Lightweight Champion Jamel Herring and mandatory challenger Lamont Roach.
In an email given to both Top Rank Boxing and Golden Boy Promotions, both sides will have been 30 days to reach an agreement.
If the two sides are unable to reach an agreement, the WBO will order a purse bid according to their Regulations of World Championship Contests. The minimum acceptable bid is $150,000. Any of the parties involved may request a purse bid procedure at any time during the negotiation process.

Herring (20-2, 10 KOs) won the world title by defeating Masayuki Ito in Kissimmee, Florida by unanimous decision over Memorial Day weekend. He originally before this mandatory was ordered trying to set up a unification bout with WBC titleholder Miguel Berchelt but explained on Twitter that Berchelt doesn’t have to take the fight immediately. Berchelt has changed his tone on facing Herring as of late by stating he wanted to take on a more significant battle against Gervonta “Tank” Davis or Vasilly Lomachenko.

Roach (19-0-1, 7 KOs) was also in action last month on the Alvarez-Jacobs card where he won a ten round unanimous decision over veteran Jonathan Oquendo. He posted on his Twitter account his excitement at the opportunity.

In terms of when and where this battle will take place, it was initially reported that Herring’s next fight would take on Veterans Day weekend. They wanted the fight to take place at a military base in honor of Herring’s Marine background but mentioned how difficult it is to get clearance.
I like the matchup for Herring in his first defense as it seems that everyone as expected since he has won came out of the woodworks wanting a crack at the new champ. One of those names most recently was WBO Africa champion, Jeremiah Nakathila.
