Devin Haney Repeats Performance In Kambosos Rematch Win

It wasn’t an exact replay of his June unanimous decision winn, but it was pretty close for undisputed lightweight champion Devin Haney, who once again dominated George Kambosos over 12 rounds to retain his 135 lb lightweight titles.

In the Top Rank Boxing main event Sunday afternoon in Melbourne, Australia, the same location as this past June, Haney once again use superior hand speed and skill to overwhelm Kambosos and remain undefeated.  He got the easy win on scores of 119-109 and 118-110 x 2.

One slight difference than the first bout was Kambosos was sharper earlier, including landing lead right hands in the first couple of rounds. However, it did not take the 23 year old Haney long to adjust, as he continued to score with quick one-two combinations and use lateral movement to frustrate the former champ.

“I went in there, I knew he was looking for the jab but I wanted to show some other tools in the arsenal,” Haney said to Main Event TV (Australia) in the ring. “My dad (Bill Haney in his corner) wanted me to throw the hook more, but I felt like the right hand is what won me the fight tonight.” 

As the judges scores indicate, the WBC/WBA/IBF/WBO titleholder’s domination was also reflected in the punch stats. Compubox had Haney with a lopsided 202-76 advantage in overall punches and more critically, 114-50 in power shots over the 12 rounds.

The rematch was part of the original contract that Kambosos negotiated with Haney that he would get another shot at Haney within 6 months if he lost to him, which he did.

This time Kambosos vowed to be more aggressive and score early, which he also did, but the last 10 rounds of the fight belonged to the champ.

Haney, now 29-0, 15 KOs, showed more of his championship mettle, especially in the second half of the bout. This, as he bloodied Kambosos over the left eye and with a nasty gash on the right side of his head above his ear.

Now, that Haney has won the two fights with Kambosos, he will set his sights on a mega payday with former unified lightweight champion and one of the best pound per pound fighters in the world in the 2010s, Vasiliy Lomachenko. The Ukrainian Lomachenko will be back in action in his first fight of 2022 next month and then, it’s believed is that he will battle Haney likely in the spring of 2023 for the four belts
