Luis Nery Scores KO To Position For Another Title Shot

Saturday night in Tijuana, Mexico, former two division world champ Luis Nery scored an impressive KO against late replacement David Carmona in the Zanfer Promotions show there.

The fighter known as “Pantera” Nery scored three total knockdowns of Carmona, including two in the third and final round to improve to 33-1 with 25 KO’s,

Nery was in complete control over the veteran Carmona and dropped him with a straight left in the second round, but Carmona wasn’t seriously hurt. However, the former WBC world title holder at bantamweight and super bantamweight, didn’t take long to find the range, again in the third.

He dropped Carmona, now 22-11-5, with a “one-two” of a right jab with a hard left behind it to the chin that sent Carmona to the seat of his pants. He actually appeared to knock Carmona down, again, a few seconds after the eight count with another straight left. However, Carmona rose shaking in his right ankle and appearing to indicate to the referee that he had slipped. He did not give Carmona an eight count and waved the former champ back in.

Nery continued the attack and eventually, dropped Carmona legitimately for the final time with another hard left to the side of the head. Carmona rose wobbly, but his corner threw the towel in for the TKO ending.

The victory now puts Nery back in the conversation for another title shot. He lost his WBC belt in May of 2021,  when Brandon Figueroa knocked him out in the 7th round in their 122 lb. unification bout. Figueroa has since lost his titles to WBO champ Stephen Fulton in a close decision last November.

It’s believed that the 27 year old Nery could be an upcoming challenger for the unified super bantamweight title holder and unbeaten Philadelphian Fulton in 2023. Fulton made a recent title defense in a 12 round decision over Daniel Roman in June.
