Andy Ruiz Jr is the American Dream

Andy Ruiz Jr. on Saturday night did something that not only was supposed to happen in the eyes of many but did it in a historic epic fashion with his victory over multiple titlist holder Anthony Joshua. Not only has his victory one for America over its British boxing counterparts, part but one the American dream of that anything is possible.

What makes this feat so astounding is not only is he the first ever Mexican heavyweight boxer ever to become world champion, which itself is impressive since boxing has been around since the dark ages – is the journey of how he got there.

Six weeks ago he was out in the sun of Carson, California punching around Alexander Dimitrenko, who after five rounds couldn’t take any more from Ruiz and retired on his stool.

Fast forward to Saturday night under the lights of Madison Square Garden, arguably the mecca for heavyweight boxing matches past or present, in front of a pro-Joshua crowd who traveled overseas from Britain only to witness an upset the likes had not seen since Corrie Sanders and Wladimir Klitschko back in 2003.

One thing for sure is: with this victory he can help his parent’s construction business, which his father Andy Ruiz Sr. would like to someday hand down to his son as an apprentice. This fight against Joshua and now the upcoming rematch will no-doubt garner him record earnings, which Ruiz Jr. stated would go to boosting the families business.

“It’s hard [in the Imperial Valley]. There’s a lot of families who need help, who have it rough,” Ruiz Jr. said in an interview with the LA Times before the fight. “If God blesses me with this win or not, I still want to help my community and give back. They’ve supported me since I was a little kid, and taught me it’s crazy how life works, man. As long as you pray and believe in your dreams, anything is possible.”

Further, he not only pulled off the upset of the year, but for those who put down a short-term investment on him capitalized as well — something he didn’t forget to mention after his victory post-fight.

“Everybody that bet on me gonna make some serious money,” is what Ruiz said after the fight.

And that my friend is the American Dream.
