Showtime Announced Gervonta Davis Jermall Charlo Summer Defenses

On Tuesday afternoon Showtime Premium cable/service announced their Summer time lineup on their network and PPV and needless to say, there will significant Premier Boxing Champions names like Gervonta Davis, as well as, Jermell and Jermall Charlo making world title defenses on separate cards.

First, Showtime confirmed that the re-scheduled date for the Jermell Charlo-Brian Castano Undisputed Jr. Middleweight title will be May 14th in Los Angeles at a site to be determined. Castano (17-0-2),  had suffered an arm injury in training for their bout that was to have been this Saturday in L.A. but is now delayed by two months.

Charlo, 34-1-1 and Castano fought a controversial draw last June, where many believed that Casstano deserved the 12 round decision- hence, the rematch.

The next significant bout will come on PPV two weeks later at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY. That’s when unbeaten Gervonta “Tank” Davis, 26-0 with 24 KOs will defend his secondary WBA Lightweight title against “Rolly” Romero in another rescheduled bout. Their December PPV was scrapped when allegations of sexual assault rose against the unbeaten challenger.

But,as we wrote earlier this year, Romero was cleared of the assault allegations by Henderson, Nevada prosecutors, when they couldn’t substantiate the charges. The flamboyant Romero is 14-0, 12 KOs and was last in the ring in July when he defeated Anthony Yigit by TKO.

As for the hard punching Davis out of Baltimore, he is one of top stars in the PBC/Mayweather Promotions stable of fighters. However, late replacement Issac Cruz fighting him on PPV in December reportedly didn’t register much audience. So, putting the Romero fight back on could create some buzz for the later in the Summer.

The other intriguing name added to make his next title defense is WBC Middleweight champ, Jermall Charlo, but it won’t be against top contender Jaime Munguia.

We wrote earlier this week that Golden Boy owner/promoter Oscar De La Hoya made a social media plea for PBC/Showtime to make the deal with his fighter by allowing the bout to also be shown on DAZN streaming. Alas, Al Haymon of PBC and Stephen Espinosa of Showitme clearly rejected that idea in their private negotiations and moved on to Charlo, 32-0, meeting veteran Maciej Sulecki of Poland.

That bout will be in Charlo’s fifth title defense of his WBC crown and will be in his hometown of Houston at a venue to be determined. Sulecki has been a top 10 contender at Middleweight for almost a decade and has previously lost in two title challenges to Daniel Jacobs and Demetrius Andrade.

These bouts being confirmed on dates and locations are added to the April Showtime PPV matching Unified 147 lb. champ Errol Spence against WBA World title holder Yordenis Ugas in one of the highly anticipated fights of the next three months. The winner will hold three of the Welterweight World titles and will be in position to demand another huge payday to potentially fight Terence Crawford in an Undisputed title bout this Fall.
