Andy Ruiz Back Sparring, Ready For January

Former heavyweight champion Andy Ruiz Jr. is on the road to getting back in the ring and gave an update on his status.

Speaking on The Last Stand Podcast with Brian Custer, Ruiz spoke about how he’s been since having right knee surgery back in August and how he’s felt from having it.

“You know what? The recovery has been amazing,” Ruiz said to Custer. “Right after I had surgery, a week after I started doing the (physical) therapy and all of that.  Today is actually my first day of sparring. It’s perfect. I’m so excited to get back in the ring at the beginning of January.”

Ruiz is coming off a unanimous decision victory over Chris Arreola back in May and was rumored to be taking on Charles Martin in October. That all has passed at this point and we’re still awaiting who is next up for the former unified heavyweight champion of the world.

“Hopefully, at the beginning of January. I should be, should be in top shape and ready to go,” Ruiz said. “You know, what, there’s a lot of opportunities right now. There’s a lot of heavyweights up and coming heavyweights right now, and I wanted to look for one in a fighting Adam Kownacki, but he took a loss (on the Tyson Fury-Deontay Wilder card),”

Kornacki and Martin may seem to not be in the mix but as Ruiz stated, their serval others I could see being in the ring with him next. Ruiz mentioned so many up-and-comers so with that in mind, put me down for the matchup between Andy Ruiz and Luis Ortiz if that can be written into reality (Yes, I know he’s not an up-and-comer). Until then, stay tuned as Ruiz climbs his back to getting back to the top of the mountain as he was back in 2019.
