Vergil Ortiz Takes On Mean Machine Saturday

Vergil Ortiz Jr. takes on Egidijus “Mean Machine” Kavaliauskas in another hometown bout in nearby Frisco, Texas Saturday night live on DAZN in what should be a great test at welterweight for the undefeated Ortiz.

Speaking at their final presser Thursday,

“I feel pretty good, you know. This is my 2nd time fighting in Frisco, Texas. The 1st time I fought outside of the arena and now I’m the main event inside so this is pretty cool and I’m ready to put on a good ” Ortiz said at the final presser to Beto Duran.

Ortiz (17-0, 17 KOs) comes into this contest fresh off his stoppage win over Maurice Hooker in the same neighborhood back in March. What is at stake is a regional WBO title which will get him one step closer to taking on the current champ at 147 pounds in Terence Crawford. He also is carrying around a streak of 17 stoppage wins, as well.

Kavaliauskas kept it short and sweet speaking at the presser.

“Because I love to fight. This is what I do. Going to be a crazy fight. He knows my style, I know his,” Kavaliauskas said.

This was a fight that was one requested by Ortiz after he stopped Hooker. Should be an interesting style matchup, and despite the odds. I’m not seeing it close at all. Most sports books has Ortiz as a 11 to 1 favorite to remain unbeaten.

“I feel as close to 100% as a fighter could get,” Ortiz said in response to coming out last fight.

That is the grand prize hopefully for the winner of this one, as Kavaliauskas was looking to be back on that path as well, stopping Mikael Zewski last September. Just don’t ask Ortiz about those prospects right now.

“Don’t ask me about Crawford or Spence. I’m focused on Kavaliauskas right now,” Ortiz said.
