De La Hoya On Ryan Garcia-Tank Davis “We’ll Make That Happen”

The world of boxing promoters and hype are synonymous and sometimes, it’s easy to dismiss what’s being said or proposed. However, it seems like a natural fight for Gervonta “Tank” Davis and (when he returns) Ryan Garcia to be made. And, Garcia’s promoter, Oscar De La Hoya, made clear earlier this week that he intends to do everything to get them together, and soon.

De La Hoya appeared this week on the “3 Knockdown Rule Podcast” with boxing insider, Steve Kim and actor/entertainer, Mario Lopez to discuss numerous subjects, including when Garcia might return to the ring and could it be against Davis?

“We’re never going to stop any fighter from making history. From making money. From building their legacy,” De La Hoya told the show.

“We’re just hear to accommodate and put everything together….Look. He (Garcia) wants it now. Garcia wants it now. And, if that’s what he wants, then that’s what we’ll give him. We’ll make that (Davis fight) happen, if he wants it now. If he wants it, 2, 3, 4 fights from now? Whatever he wants. We’re here to accommodate.”

It’s no secret that the 21-0 Garcia was publicly demanding to fight Davis after he dispatched England’s Luke Campbell on January 2nd in Dallas. Garcia saying that night post-fight,

“I want to be a man of my word. I want to fight ‘Tank’ (Davis). I’m ready for it. This fight I put down an Olympic Gold Medalist (Campbell). Lomachenko couldn’t stop him. Linares couldn’t finish him. I showed today, I’m special.”

Garcia and Davis then battled over social media later that week and Garcia even confronted Davis about the two fighting during a video/audio taping of Mike Tyson’s podcast.

Still Golden Boy and Premier Boxing Champions weren’t able to come together and make that fight happen. Subsequently, Garcia agreed to fight Lightweight contender, veteran Javier Fortuna for July. However the 22 year old decided to pull out of that fight citing “mental health issues.”

Fortuna is now fighting replacement Jo Jo Diaz instead in the Golden Boy main event Friday night in Los Angeles.

So, we are left to wonder if Garcia/Davis can be made? This is especially, since PBC in particular has had little interest in working with De La Hoya or his promotion.

“If you’re in a great fight with a great fighter, then you can’t lose,” De La Hoya said in summation to Lopez/Kim.

Now, we’ll find out if the sides can actually agree on that point.
