Arum Floats July 24th Las Vegas For Tyson Fury-Deontay Wilder

On Thursday during the Las Vegas press event for the Josh Taylor-Jose Ramirez Undisputed 140 lb. title fight Saturday night, Top Rank Boxing promoter Bob Arum gave another update on the fast moving scheduling of the third fight between WBC Heavyweight Champ, Tyson Fury and the now former champ, Deontay Wilder. And, the goal is apparently to be ready in as soon as two months for it to happen.

In a one on one interview with Boxing-Social.com after the Taylor-Ramirez event concluded, Arum told them that they don’t agree with the arbitrator ordering the third fight. But, that they will accept it and he says it will be set for July 24th at Allegiant Stadium, the home of the Las Vegas Raiders,

“The judge or the arbitrator saw it (the ruling) differently….So, now, when you get knocked down, like we did, you pick yourself up. And, Tyson will do that. And, we’ll fight Wilder on July 24th in Las Vegas,” Arum told the site.

The ruling from Federal Judge, Daniel Weinstein, who had been arbitrating the Wilder-Fury contract and rematch clause came Monday.

And, as we wrote in the aftermath of that ruling, Weinstein heard the compelling argument from Wilder’s side with legal precedence from former Undisputed Heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis having successfully argued in U.S. Federal Court 2001 that his rematch clause with Hasim Rahman was to be enforced.

When Rahman had tried to get out of the Lewis rematch and fight Mike Tyson in a much more lucrative bout,  Lewis successfully argued to the court that the rematch should not just be enforced on the basis of what’s in the contract specified, but also because at the age of 35, his age and diminishing skills meant that having to wait longer for whatever happened with the potential Rahman-Tyson fight would irreparably harm his boxing career and financial gain.

The court sided with  Lewis, he got the rematch later in 2001 and kayoed Rahman with a single shot to regain his titles.

Wilder is in a similar position, as he is also 35 years old, hasn’t fought in 15 months, and is facing the very real possibility that if the arbitrator had not ruled his way, that Fury was never going to fight him, again.

And, the arbitrator’s ruling has given him the ultimate leverage on Fury, as the WBC could step and demand Fury fight Wilder or strip him before a bout with Britain’s Anthony Joshua or anyone else.

As for Allegiant Stadium, the July 24th date keeps them out of the Las Vegas Raiders preseason schedule of home games. However, their is important international soccer match that will be played there eight days later. That’s when the “Concacaf Gold Cup Final” between the last remaining teams from the U.S., Mexico and Central America tournament will play their final match at the Stadium.
