Demetrius Andrade Speaks On Williams, Canelo

Current WBO middleweight champion Demetrius Andrade is finally in action after a 14-month hiatus against Liam Williams on April 17 at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Florida, which will air live DAZN in the US.

Speaking on his upcoming fight with Brian Custer on The Last Stand Podcast, Andrade said about what he could see from him in the ring once the bell rings on his latest title defense.

“You’re going to expect the same thing from me,” Andrade said to host Brian Custer.”Solid gameplan, strategy, dominance. Landing shots, angles. Just an all-around good performance. I’m going to give people what they’re missing, you know, the sweet science.”

But don’t be mistaken, Andrade still thinks Williams isn’t on his level going into this contest.

“Williams is not someone that is on my radar, just speaking facts. At the end of the day, he’s not an elite fighter, elite-level guy that people tune into. Williams is not going to stop this train. I expect him to bring a fight because this is a chance for him to make a name. But at the end of the day, you get to say I lost to Demetrius Andrade,” Andrade stated.

I wonder if he sells those on T-shirts? If not, this seems like a missed opportunity.

Another topic that Andrade mentioned on The Last Stand is that Canelo Alvarez’s fight resume isn’t that impressive as he is fighting old guys who are past their prime. I’ve written about him saying that last January, but he banged that drum again as the only thing that changed is that everyone is a year older.

“Kovalev wasn’t what we knew from back then. It’s a good resume, those are good names, but did he fight those guys in their primes? How you pound for pound, but you’re not fighting the best guys today? You fought GGG (Gennadiy Golovkin) at 37 years old.

You’re not fighting none of these guys in their prime. When I say something, they go back and try to ridicule my situation. I don’t have a Miguel Cotto to fight right now. I don’t have a Kovalev to fight right now. I don’t have these guys, and these guys probably wouldn’t want to fight me anyway,” Andrade said.

Andrade mentioned he plans to move up after his title defense against Williams. The thinking behind that is if he retains his WBO belt against Willaims,  it will force the mandatory clause against the winner of Alvarez and Billy Joe Saunders. We’ll see how things play out after April 17.
