Report- Julio Caesar Martinez Will Be Part Of Canelo PPV

A Saturday night report says another prominent World Championship fight has been added to the upcoming Canelo Alvarez – Callum Smith pay-per-view card at the Alamodome in San Antonio.

Boxingscene.com reported the WBC Flyweight World Champion Julio Cesar Martinez will be the co-feature fighter on the Canelo – Smith December 19th show,

Martinez, 17-1, 13 KOs, will be in action for the first time since February. That’s, when he scored a 12 round unanimous decision (photo top) over Jay Harris in Frisco, Texas, in the first defense of his crown.. He won the WBC 112 lb. title against Christopher Rosales in December of last year.

The 25-year- old Martinez was to have been the headliner on the Matchroom Boxing show in the streets of downtown Tulsa, Oklahoma, in August, but a throat infection sidelined him from that main event title defense. And, the fight he had wasn’t rescheduled in the short term.

It’s still unclear for now, whom the December opponent would be, but there’s a chance it will be McWilliams Arroyo, who was to have been the August title challenger. He is 20 – 4 with 15 KOs.

On Friday, Matchroom confirmed that the Canelo-Smith battle will be in San Antonio on December 19th.

Earlier this week Eddie Hearn and Matchroom finalized the previously rumored matchup between Alvarez 53-1-2 and the 27-0 Englishman. He announced later Friday that tickets, which will be in demand, will go on sale Monday.

That bout has been long rumored for the last few months and now that Alvarez dis-entangled himself from his former promoter Oscar De La Hoya/Golden Boy Promotions, Hearn was able to swoop in and make the fight happen.

Alvarez has not been in the ring since last November, when he captured the WBO Light Heavyweight title by 11th round TKO over Sergey Kovalev. He quickly vacated that title and made clear that he would prefer to fight at Super Middleweight.

Alvarez got to walk away from his promotional deal with Golden Boy Promotions (and De La Hoya) after wining a legal showdown by suing the promoter for $280 million in California Federal Court and getting him “to fold” to let Canelo become a free agent.

It is believed that Matchroom will be able to have at least 10,000 fans socially distanced in attendance for Canelo’s return creating a live gate and intense atmosphere vs. the sterile “bubble” shows that having been going on in the U.S. and elsewhere.

Back to Martinez, he will obviously benefit from being on one of the biggest stages of his career in this upcoming matchup.
