Jamel Herring- Carl Frampton Battle Confirmed

A delayed battle at 130 lb. for the WBO World Title is now confirmed and it looks like champ Jamel Herring and challenger Carl Frampton will fight before the end of 2020, as well.

This, after Frampton and his promoter both separately confirmed this weekend that he’ll get the shot at Herring soon.

First, the Irishman Frampton, known as “The Jackal,” excitedly took to social media on Friday evening U.K. time to announce that he’s going for a third world title in three weight divisions:

Then, one of Herring’s British promoters, Frank Warren of Queensberry Promotions, re-affirmed in a TV interview on BT Sport Saturday night that the Jr. Lightweight title bout will be happening. However, he stopped short on the specifics of exact date and where,

First, Herring, the 34 year old New York native and former U.S. Marine with two tours of duty in the Iraq War, made the second successful defense of his WBO belt in early September by gutting out a 9th round DQ win in Las Vegas over Jonathan Oquendo.

Herring, who improved to 22-2, had to deal all night with the mauling style of Oquendo, who constantly used tactics of leaping in with his head and grabbing Herring’s right arm with his left to hold and wrestle him throughout the fight. Oquendo had a point deduction for a head butt and was repeatedly warned also about the grabbing and mauling before finally being disqualified.

By securing that win, Herring is back in position for his biggest career payday. He was originally to have scrapped with Frampton in Ireland back in June before Coronavirus shut down the sport. In addition to Top Rank staging his three title fights, Herring has now also signed a co-promotional deal with MTK Global, who also has a similar one with Frampton.

Thus, their fight was even easier to secure.

Frampton (28-2, 16 KOs) has held the Unified Junior Featherweight and Featherweight World Championships and has recently moved up to 130 lb. He most recently fought in the middle of August in an easy win over late replacement Darren Traynor at the BT Sport Television Studios in London.

It is believed that Herring-Frampton will be held in the U.S. and probably in front of some fans, socially distanced in December.
