Shawn Porter and Whyte-Povetkin headline Saturday fights

A busy late August Saturday in the world of boxing sees fights from the West coast of the United States all the way to the U.K.  And, prominent names like Shawn Porter, Dillian Whyte, Eleider Alvarez and Katie Taylor are all involved.

First, Matchroom Boxing will conclude its August “Fight Camp” series, as they have been building towards a significant final couple of fights on this Saturday night.

And, their main event is probably the biggest fight of this Saturday worldwide, as English WBC number one heavyweight Contender Whyte is back in action taking on Russian former IBF World Heavyweight champion, Alexander Povetkin.

With a victory, Whyte is in firm position to get a title shot either with WBC champ, Tyson Fury or a potential rematch against Unified Champ, Anthony Joshua.

Povetkin is at the end of his career at 40 years of age and is a considerable underdog in this matchup being held at the Matchroom headquarters back yard of their estate.

Hear us discuss this Heavyweight battle and preview the entire weekend on our Big Fight Weekend podcast with England’s “Boxing Writer,” David Payne, and our site’s Sr. Writer, Marquis Johns:

Just prior to Whyte – Povetkin will be the women’s Undisputed World Lightweight title defense of unbeaten Katie Taylor of Ireland. She is rematching Germany’s Delphine Persoon in a scheduled 10-round battle.

Those two fought a spirited first fight, last June at Madison Square Garden in New York with both Taylor and Persoon bruised and swollen at the end. Taylor was given the decision and is one of the top female stars in the world.

Persoon is the veteran with more in-ring experience as a professional and looks to spoil Taylor’s immediate future for a huge dollar fight.

In Los Angeles, Premier Boxing Champions series returns to Fox Sports network TV, as former WBC Welterweight Champion Shawn Porter will headline the main event. Porter is fighting a little-known unbeaten German Sebastian Formella, and is not expected to be given much of a challenge.

Then again, anything can happen in boxing and it’s not beyond the realm that Formella could land a lucky punch etc. to make this one interesting.

If Porter is successful, it appears that PBC is setting up for him to rematch Unified 147 lb. World champ, Errol Spence, probably in the first part of 2021. Spence beat Porter in a 12-round exciting fight in Los Angeles last September taking Porter’s WBC title.

If Porter does his part Saturday, then it will be up to Spence to retain his belt in his Pay-per-view title defense against Danny Garcia coming in November.

And finally, the equally significant fight card involving contenders will be in Las Vegas.

That’s where Top Rank Boxing puts on another show within its “Bubble” at the MGM Grand Resort. The main event pits light heavyweight contenders Eleider “Storm” Alvarez and Joe Smith, Jr. Alvarez is the former WBO 175 lb. World Champ, having beaten Sergey Kovalev for the title in August of 2018. Kovalev decisioned Alvarez to take the belt back in February of 2019.

The winner of this fight will be in line for a shot at the now-vacant WBO light heavyweight title. It briefly belong to Canelo Alvarez after he knocked out Kovalev last November, but then quickly vacated the bill to move back down to smaller weight
