Report- Mike Tyson Roy Jones comeback “fight” delayed

It came as a surprise that retired Hall of Fame Fighters, Mike Tyson and Roy Jones Jr., were going to mix it up in a September exhibition. However, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that there are now complications and their bout is off until at least November.

Ryan O’Hara of Ring Magazine tweeted Sunday afternoon that the 8 round exhibition battle between the two legends originally scheduled in California without fans and on Pay-per-View will now be pushed back by at least two months.

O’Hara gave no other details of why, but a source familiar with the exhibition TV talks told Big Fight Weekend recently that one of the biggest concerns about putting it on with the 54 year old former Undisputed Heavyweight Champ, Tyson, and the 51 year old former three division World Champ, Jones, on Pay-Per-View, is that without any fans for live gate revenue it stood to lose significant money.

And therefore, all involved might reconsider and walk away altogether.

Now, does this mean that the organizers are playing a waiting game until they can at least have some socially distanced fans present?

Could be.

Is there another complication like injury etc.?

Sure.

Backing up. As we wrote three weeks ago, Tyson and Jones agreed to this eight round fight, apparently with extra protective 12 oz. gloves, but without out head gear to be at the Dignity Healthy Sports Complex in Carson, CA in late September.

In the press release for the bout, Tyson announced the formation of a “Legends Only League” that would hold many such bouts in the future. And that “the fight” between he and Jones would be streamed on a newly created “Triller” streaming service/app,

“It’s always been a dream of mine to create, build, and honor athletes,” said Tyson in the press release. “All athletes live to follow their dreams and fight for excellence. It’s something that is inherent in each of us and that drive never goes away. Legends Only League will support athletes in their individual sports, creating some of the most epic competitions, products and live events in the world.”

California Athletic Commission Executive Director, Andy Foster, confirmed the sanctioning of the exhibition, but that there would extensive safety precautions taken and basically, alluded to Tyson and Jones not being able to significantly hurt each other as part of the “fight” agreement.

The man who defended part or the Undisputed Heavyweight Title 9 times, Tyson hasn’t fought professionally in 15 years finishing with a 50-6 career record.

Jones, who is three years younger, was actually in the ring two years ago winning a decision in his hometown of Pensacola, FL over Scott Sigmon in a Cruiserweight fight at age 49. The former Middleweight, Super Middleweight and Light Heavyweight champ is  66-9 all time.

Will Tyson and Jones ever square off?

For now, all we know is the “fight” is closer to not happening (if it ever was) than actually happening.
