Jermall Charlo eyes three-division title: ‘Every division I stepped into, I was able to conquer’
The career of Jermall Charlo continues to be an enigma, with his activity slowing down drastically since his 2021 win against Juan Macias Montiel. He did return in 2025, but another lengthy layoff ensued. It appears that Charlo is focused on reaching the top of the super middleweight division. Speaking to The Ring, Charlo named a champion at 168 who would be a good fight for him.
The career of Jermall Charlo
Charlo (34-0, 23 KOs) carries plenty of pop in his punches. He’s aggressive on the inside without rushing his work. His mid-to-short-range fighting is impressive, and normally fighters like this can smother their work, but he continues to pick his punches.
He looked good last time out against Thomas LaManna, scoring three knockdowns before the fight was stopped by the doctor, awarding Charlo the sixth-round TKO victory.
Wins against Brandon Adams and Sergiy Derevyanchenko were impressive, and despite being a two-weight world champion, a legitimate criticism of Charlo remains: he hasn’t fought anyone elite!
Charlo aims for the top at 168
Speaking to The Ring, Jermall Charlo revealed he nearly fought then-WBA super middleweight champion Armando Resendiz: “I was close to fighting,” Charlo told The Ring, referring to the potential bout with Resendiz. “Negotiations didn’t work out in my favor. I’m not here to just fight for money. I’m gonna fight for my legacy, and I want to make it worthwhile. You can’t just rush me into a camp. I like to have a full camp like I do now.
“And it doesn’t matter who I’m fighting, I like to be in tip-top shape. It was close, but hats off to Munguia. Since he won, we should be able to fight.”
Jaime Munguia (46-2, 35 KOs) ultimately took the fight and beat Resendiz (16-3, 11 KOs) by unanimous decision. Reflecting on Munguia’s win, Charlo was impressed:
“I liked that he came out different,” Charlo said. “Munguia boxed. He showed us a different side of him. He showed himself as a true champion. He stood in the pocket, and he got hit a couple of times. I like the fighter. I think that’s a good fight for me.”
Discussing the opportunity of becoming a world champion at 36: “It would mean the world to me,” Charlo said of becoming a three-division champion. “That’s something I want to do. Every division I stepped into, I was able to conquer a title. That’s like a major goal for me.”
