Joshua for this fight will be under the tutelage of Tyson Fury’s ex-trainer, Ben Davison. AJ will need to establish his jab and work off that to try and dominate Wallin. The Swedish heavyweight rides punches well and fights effectively off the back foot, counterpunching as proven in his win against Murat Gassiev.
Davison has valuable experience with Wallin, having coached Fury for his tough win against the Swedish heavyweight. It’s important for AJ to not be reckless, as he will be punished. He needs to work on the outside as he did in the Andy Ruiz rematch, but he needs to be more aggressive to trouble Wallin. If AJ can establish his jab early and get a solid footing in the fight, and let his hands go in the following rounds, it will help ensure he dictates the pace of the fight, and not allow the Swede to counterpunch and play to his strengths. It’s going to be fascinating to see the influence Davison has had on Joshua’s style.
Otto Wallin
Wallin will seemingly be an awkward opponent for AJ as he was for Fury. He is a tough southpaw who moves well – and counterpunches effectively. The Swedish fighter will look to establish his jab and let his combinations go – looking to frustrate AJ.
The Swedish heavyweight is durable and has never been hurt in his career, so AJ will need to pick his punches well. Wallin will be playing a dangerous game inviting the heavy-handed Joshua on, so it’s imperative Wallin controls the distance well and stops the British fighter from getting up close to unload his punches.
Prediction for Joshua vs. Wallin
This will not be a straightforward fight for Joshua, as Wallin is a strong southpaw, entering the ring full of confidence. However, this is a great opportunity for AJ to send a message to the rest of the world. There’s no doubt Ben Davison will have him tactically prepared, and it would be great to see a confident Joshua enter the ring and take it to Wallin. At Big Fight Weekend, we are siding with Ricky Hatton, who recently – gave his prediction on the flight: “I think AJ will be too powerful for him.” We are going for a Joshua win, with the Brit stopping Wallin in the later rounds.
