Title fights from around the world – Pedro Taduran and Camila Zamorano edition

Today, boxing world title fights take place around the globe and are more accessible to watch than ever before. Sometimes, championship bouts do not receive as much attention and go underreported. Big Fight Weekend commits to writing about boxing news, previews and recaps. As such, the site now has a recurring segment on championship bouts from around the world from the past week.

The focus of these pieces will be on clashes ranging from atomweight to heavyweight that had the WBA, WBC, IBF, and/or WBO titles on the line. This week’s edition of “Title Fights From Around the World” consists of two recaps. In the Philippines, a reigning minimumweight world champion made a successful defence. Over in México, a recently crowned 17-year-old atomweight world champion made her first title defence.

Pedro Taduran vs. Christian Balunan fight recap

Pedro Taduran (19-4-1, 13 KOs) retained his world title with a unanimous decision win over Christian Balunan (12-1, 7 KOs).

Scores for their bout were 118-110 (x2) and 117-111. Taduran remains the IBF minimumweight world champion with the result. He won the title in July last year against Ginjiro Shigeoka. This was his second defence of it.

Taduran-Balunan headlined an October 26 MP Promotions card at the San Andres Sports Complex in Manila, Philippines. Fight fans around the world could catch the action live on the Elorde TV Facebook page.

Taduran remained on the front foot for the entirety of the bout. An accidental clash of heads in round four caused a cut on the right eyebrow of Balunan, but he was able to continue until the final bell. Taduran, who has fought at a higher level, had little trouble outworking his opponent. He was clearly winning most of the rounds despite Balunan’s best efforts. In the end, all three judges saw Taduran winning the contest comfortably.

Camila Zamorano vs. Sana Hazuki fight recap

Camila Zamorano (13-0, 1 KO) won a comfortable unanimous decision against Sana Hazuki (13-12-1, 6 KOs) to retain her world title.

Scores for their bout were 100-90 across the board. Zamorano remains the WBC atomweight world champion with the victory. She had become the interim titlist in June of this year. Tina Rupprecht’s recent retirement meant that Zamorano became the WBC’s primary titlist. This was the Mexican boxer’s first defence.

Zamorano-Hazuki took place on an October 25 Zanfer Promotions and Coliseo Promotions card at the Arena Sonora in Hermosillo, México. Fight fans in the country could catch the action live on Azteca. The entire bout is also now available on the TV Azteca Deportes YouTube channel.

The pair got off to a quick start, throwing a high volume of punches at each other. Zamorano had the better of these exchanges and soon settled in. She was able to land her swinging shots from a distance. Hazuki struggled to close the distance and was unable to avoid many of the shots Zamorano threw. The reigning champion had little difficulty outworking her opponent and thus was able to secure the unanimous decision win.

A remarkable aspect regarding Zamorano is that she is 17 years old. That makes her boxing’s youngest current world champion. She is also one of youngest people to ever hold a boxing world title. Only Wilfred Benítez was younger at the time of winning his title.
