Cristian Araneta vs. Thanongsak Simsri Fight Recap

Thanongsak Simsri (39-1, 34 KOs) overcame an early knockdown to defeat Cristian Araneta (25-3, 20 KOs) via split decision.

While one judge scored it 114-113 for Araneta, the other two had it 116-111 and 115-112 for Simsri. With the victory, the boxer from Thailand is now the IBF light flyweight world champion. Masamichi Yabuki was the previous titleholder, but he elected to vacate the belt after winning a title at flyweight.

After an opening round spent figuring each other out, both men opened up in the second. It was Simsri who had success initially, sitting down on punches and landing hard shots to the head and body. By the end of the round two, Araneta was sporting a cut above the left eyebrow.

With roughly 30 seconds to go in the third, Araneta landed a left hook to the head that sent Simsri to the canvas. The Thai fighter got up, however, and continued to trade with his opponent. Simsri was also sporting a cut over his left eye by the end of round three. While Araneta’s left hand was dangerous for the entirety of the fight, Simsri’s greater activity was winning him the rounds.

In the second half of the contest, Araneta pressed forward as he looked for an opportunity to land his left hand. Simsri was still the more active of the two, however, while also being more defensively responsible. A lack of activity proved to be the undoing of Araneta as two of the judges saw his opponent as the victor after 12 rounds. Simsri was simply the busier of the two and that helped him claim his first ever world title.

Untelevised Undercard

Ren Ohashi (4-0, 4 KOs) won via fifth round technical knockout against Guangheng Luan (13-9-2, 9 KOs). The official time of stoppage for their eight-round featherweight contest was 2:23.

Yuito Moriwaki (1-0, 0 KOs) won a unanimous decision over Ha So Baek (3-2, 2 KOs). Scores for their eight-round super middleweight fight were 79-72, 78-73, and 77-74.

On a portion of the undercard that was not part of the ESPN+ broadcast, Seiya Yamaguchi (4-1, 2 KOs) won a unanimous decision against Ryosuke Kiuchi (3-4-1, 2 KOs). Scores for the four-round lightweight bout were 40-35 and 39-36 (x2).
