Today’s edition of “Title Fights From Around The World” consists of just one recap. Over in New Zealand, a new light heavyweight champion was crowned. With the win, this titlist is one of two boxers who hold belts across two weight classes simultaneously (the other being Katie Taylor).
Lani Daniels Becomes Two-Division Champion
Lani Daniels (10-2-2, 1 KO) won the IBF light heavyweight title with a majority decision win over Australia’s Desley Robinson (5-2, 1 KO). While one judge had the score 95-95, the other two saw it 97-93 and 96-94 for “The Smiling Assassin.”
The scorecards reflect how close this fight was in the judge’s eyes. Daniels’ approach was to walk forward and apply pressure on Robinson. This did not concern “Lady D,” as she was willing to trade with Daniels throughout their clash. In round seven, the Kiwi landed the more telling shots. This marked a significant point in the fight as the fighter from New Zealand, appeared to edge the next three rounds en route to victory.
In the days leading up to fight night, “The Smiling Assassin” expressed an interest in moving down to super middleweight. Savannah Marshall holds the WBA, IBF and WBO titles in that weight class. The vacant WBC belt – will be contested by Franchón Crews-Dezurn and Shadasia Green on the undercard of Jake Paul-Andre August on Dec. 15.
