Sunny Edwards Explores Boxing Future After Galal Yafai Defeat
Sunny Edwards enjoyed a memorable professional boxing career, holding the IBF flyweight world title from 2021 to 2023. A standout in the amateur ranks, he won multiple national championships before turning professional. Following his second career defeat to Galal Yafai, “Showtime” announced his retirement. Recently, Edwards spoke to BoxingScene about his decision to retire and his future in the sport.

Edwards Considers Trainer Role and New Opportunities
Edwards suffered his first career defeat against the exceptional Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez. Last time out, he was stopped in the sixth round by the 2020 Olympic gold medalist Galal Yafai. He retired in the ring after the Yafai fight and when asked by BoxingScene about a return to the sport, the former IBF champ did not rule out a return as a trainer and revealed he has plenty of options.

When discussing what could be next: “A bit of managing, a bit of commentary,” said Edwards. “I’ve already been contacted about coming in and joining fighters’ camps for periods of time, working corners.”
Edwards continued: “I’ve got aspirations to want to promote. I had, this year, my first co-promotion with the Sauerlands [Kalle and Nisse], when [my brother] Charlie fought Thomas Assomba.”

“I’ve really been trying to diversify. I’m quite excited for the future. I don’t want to rush to try to train my first fighter. That’s a big commitment, [so not] until I’m ready,” said Sunny regarding his excitement for the future. “I’ve got things I think I’ll be able to get my hands into, and training is something I’ve always really looked forward to and always enjoyed doing.”

Looking back on his career, Edwards thanked those who supported him: “For everyone that bought in, engaged, got emotionally involved, I just want to say thank you, and long may it continue. I hope Galal has a great push and a great career.”
