Report- Jaime Munguia To Meet Daniel Jacobs In June

Top Middleweight contender Jaime Munguia was hoping for a huge fight/payday with WBC champ, Jermall Charlo. However, with the that fight off the table, he’s apparently to turned to a familiar named former champion to fight next instead.

ESPN Knockout’s Salvador Rodriguez reported Tuesday afternoon that he’s learned that Munguia and Golden Boy Promotions are in serious discussions with former IBF Middleweight title holder, Daniel Jacobs for a June bout,

This is translated from the ESPN Desportes website,

The Mexican Jaime Munguía could not finish the duel that everyone expected against Jermall Charlo, but he could end the first half of this 2022 with a solid fight, as long as they reach an agreement to face former world champion Daniel Jacobs, which would happen on June 11 and at an agreed weight of 164 pounds, revealed sources close to the talks.

One of the things that Jaime Mungía and his team were looking for for the second fight this year after defeating D’Mitrius Ballard in just three rounds before a great entrance at the Tijuana Bullring, was to go straight for a world championship. or a big name fighter, and Charlo was supposed to be the ideal choice; however, problems in the negotiations over broadcast rights broke down the fight

Without the fight for the World Boxing Council championship against Charlo and without the fight against Janibek Alimkhanuly for the interim title of the World Boxing Organization, the options were exhausted and the name of Daniel Jacobs emerged as a solid possibility, although above 160 pounds, rather an agreed weight between 160 and 168 pounds, the 164.

As we wrote earlier this month, Munguia’s attempt to get a deal with Charlo for this Summer fell apart in large part because of Oscar De La Hoya’s insistence that DAZN Streaming be involved in the broadcast/PPV for the bout. However, Charlo, who is handled by Premier Boxing Champions and Showtime refused that demand.

Charlo will now fight Polish journeyman, contender Maciel Sulecki on June 18th on a Showtime PPV.

As for the 25 year old Munguia, he’s is 39-0, ranked #1 by the WBO, and a spectacular puncher. But, he also turned down a fight with Janibek Alimkhanuly of Kazakhstan for the vacant WBO World title that Demetrius Andrade left behind to move up to 168 lb.

And, Rodriguez reported that the proposed Jacobs fight would now be June 11th, the weekend before Charlo’s latest defense.

As for the 35 year old Jacobs, he looked slower and took some punishment in his recent loss to England’s John Ryder last month. That dropped the former champ to 37-4 and has some wondering if his better days are behind him?
