Other Title Fights From Around The World
Today, boxing world title fights take place around the globe and are more accessible to watch than ever before. Sometimes, however, certain championship bouts do not receive as much attention and go underreported. Big Fight Weekend has a commitment to writing about boxing news, previews, and recaps. As such, the site now has a recurring segment on world title bouts from around the world from the past week. It will recap fights that have not already been covered by the site, with a specific focus on clashes ranging from atomweight to heavyweight that had the WBA, WBC, IBF, and/or WBO titles on the line.
Today’s edition of “Other Title Fights From Around The World” consists of just one recap. A new super welterweight champion was crowned in Montreal, Canada on October 11, just days before Tim Tszyu made the first defence of his own title.
Femke Hermans vs. Mary Spencer
In a rematch of their bout from last December, Femke Hermans (17-4, 7 KOs) beat Mary Spencer (7-2, 5 KOs) via majority decision. While one judge scored the fight a draw (95-95), the other two had it 97-93 and 96-94 for Hermans. With the win, she claimed the vacant IBF super welterweight champion. The belt was previously held by Natasha Jonas, who moved down to welterweight. Both women headlined a card at the Montreal Casino in Québec, Canada. Punching Grace broadcast the October 11 event in Canada and ESPN+ did so in the USA.
Spencer started the fight well and was more controlled in the early rounds. However, the tide shifted in the second half of the fight. Hermans’ movement, footwork and counter-punching allowed her to come back into the fight and once again claim victory over Spencer.
Hermans is now a two division world champion. In 2018, she beat Nikki Adler to become the WBC super middleweight champion but made no defences of that title. Hermans also had title shots against Claressa Shields (for the WBC, WBA, and IBF middleweight titles), Elin Cederroos (for the IBF super middleweight title) and Savannah Marshall (for the WBO middleweight title).
