Title Fights From Around the World: Nazarena Romero Becomes Champ With Stoppage

Today, boxing world title fights take place around the globe and are more accessible to watch than ever before. Sometimes, championship bouts do not receive as much attention and go underreported. Big Fight Weekend commits to writing about boxing news, previews, and recaps. As such, the site now has a recurring segment on championship bouts – from around the world from the past week.

The focus of these pieces will be on clashes ranging from atomweight to heavyweight that had the WBA, WBC, IBF, and/or WBO titles on the line. This edition of “Title Fights From Around the World” consists of just one recap. In Argentina, a new super bantamweight champion was crowned.

Nazarena Romero Becomes Champ With Stoppage

Argentina’s Nazarena Romero (14-0-2, 8 KOs) won via tenth-round technical knockout against México’s Paulette Cuesta (17-4, 4 KOs) to become the WBA super bantamweight champion.

The time of stoppage was 0:18. With the victory, Romero won the vacant WBA title that had been stripped from Erika Cruz due to her testing positive for a banned substance. Romero and Cruz had previously fought each other to a split draw in May this year. Initially, the Argentinian had been ordered to face Mayerlin Rivas in a rematch for the title. However, Cuesta ended up being Romero’s opponent for the super bantamweight belt.

The fight took place on an August 24 KO Drugs Day organized by the WBA at the Casino Buenos Aires in Argentina. Boxing fans in Argentina could catch the action live on TyC Sports. The rest of the world could do so on DAZN.

Romero was dominant throughout the contest. At the time of stoppage, two judges had her up 89-82 while the other had it 88-83. The fight came to an end when Romero landed a barrage of punches with Cuesta on the ropes. Roberto Ramirez Jr. stepped in to put an end to proceedings and Cuesta’s corner also threw in the towel.

This was Romero’s third attempt at challenging for a world title. Previously, she had challenged for the WBA super bantamweight belt against Cruz and Rivas. Both fights ended in draws.

Note: BoxRec currently does not indicate whether a fight had any WBA title on the line. For more on why, here is an article by Brunch Boxing.
