Miguel Berchelt Hints At Move To Lightweight
Two-time world champion Miguel Berchelt has had some time to reflect on his loss to Oscar Valdez, and what he said may suggest that his time at junior lightweight is finally up.
Speaking with ESPN Deportes, Berchelt stated that looking back on Valdez’s loss, it wasn’t his night which he was stopped in ten rounds to lose the WBC Jr. Lightweight title he had successfully defended since winning it in a war against Francisco Vargas in 2017.
“No, it was not my night, we must not demerit the work that my rival, Oscar, did. He made a great fight, made a great preparation, and well the result is there, the truth is that it was already difficult for me to give the Super Feather a lot,” Berchelt spoke to ESPN Deportes.
“I do not want to make excuses because at the end of the day I think there are none in boxing. It was not my night, it was not my best version, the truth is that I did not feel fast as on other nights, it may be that the weight affected me, perhaps the lightweight I see very close and, well, to sit down with our team and see what is best for me, what is best for Miguel Berchelt,” Berchelt said.
It was worth noting that there is some merit to this as at the weigh-in, Berchelt was seen racing for food immediately as he stepped off the scales. The trouble of him making weight was a problem for a while, and since there isn’t any immediate rematch with Valdez to reclaim the title, it may be a time for him to move up.
“Without a doubt, the Lightweight category I see very close, but we are going to sit down with our work team. With Mario Abraham with Fernando Beltrán with Alfredo Caballero and see what was done well, what was done wrong, go through the cassette, the film, make the necessary adjustments and come back stronger, correct the mistakes as was done in the first defeat we had, which was a defeat that I did many years ago and became World Champion,” Berchelt stated.
