Magdaleno wins in messy fight over Vicente

Former world champion Jessie Magdaleno (28-1, 18 KOs )took on Yenifel Vicente  (36-5-2, 28 KOs) to close out the Top Rank Boxing card that aired on Thursday night. And, it saw Magdaleno cruise to a messy victory over a disqualified Vicente due to low blows.

The main event that took place at “The Bubble” inside the MGM Grand Ballroom in Las Vegas is the second night of fights put on by Top Rank. And, this card up and down had more action than Tuesday’s card, which saw Shakur Stevenson knock around Felix Carballo for six rounds.

Magdaleno got to work early in this 10 round contest as with a minute left to go in the 1st round; he caught Vicente with a counter right hook for the early knockdown.

The fourth round was halted halfway as Magdaleno was hit with a low blow by Vicente but then, he landed on Magdaleno clean with a right the head after referee Robert Byrd warning to stop. Byrd came in way late to break it up, thus leading to Magdaleno being laid out and having to use all of the allotted five minutes to recover. Vicente got another point deduction in the same round with less than a minute to go.

Vicente added another shot below the belt to start the tenth round as well, which really should’ve disqualified him, but Byrd kept the fight going. He then threw another one with about 110 seconds to go in the contest, and Byrd had finally seen enough and disqualified Byrd due to the fourth low blow in the fight.

The official time of the stoppage was 1:38 in the tenth round.

Magdaleno knocked down Vicente with a check right hook in the fifth round to score his second knockdown of the fight. Magdaleno, with his hand speed in this fight, was the key to what had him ahead in this fight. Except for the low blows by Vicente, he didn’t have much to worry about in this contest. While the broadcast was wanting Magdaleno to close out the show on Vincente, this fight went the distance and made this fight pretty one-sided.

Magdaleno, who is ranked #1 by the WBC and #4 by the WBO at 122 lbs., would be next in line for that yearly confrontation with current WBC titleholder Gary Russell Jr.  That title shot wouldn’t be for a while against Russell like all title fights won’t be for a long time, but Magdaleno looked crisp but not amazing in this one.
