Luis Alberto López Keen On Knocking Out Joet Gonzalez

IBF featherweight champion Luis Alberto López (28-2, 16 KOs) faces Joet Gonzalez (26-3, 15 KOs) on Friday, September 15. The López vs Gonzalez bout will take place at the American Bank Center in Corpus Christi, Texas. Viewers in the United States can catch the action live on ESPN, ESPN Deportes, and ESPN+.

López first won his title by defeating Josh Warrington via a majority decision in Leeds late last year. He then made his first successful title defense by knocking out Michael Conlan in five rounds in Belfast on May 27 in a Lopez KO victory. Now fighting in the United States for the first time since August 2022, López says he is looking for the knockout against Gonzalez.

Following a training session, López provided his thoughts on the fight and what it means for him to fight on Mexican Independence Day weekend:

“I’m always working on being a little smarter and on knowing how to do everything in the ring because sometimes we are going to need it. I am always working on improving all aspects.”

“I’m going for the knockout. It’s a personal challenge that I have. Joet Gonzalez has faced great fighters like Shakur Stevenson, Emanuel Navarrete and Isaac Dogboe, and he has never been knocked out. Knocking out a tough fighter like him is a huge goal for me.”

“I know this fight will be difficult. Joet Gonzalez is a fighter who comes forward throwing a lot of punches. But I like to come forward, too. So, we know it’s going to be a real clash.”

“Representing Mexicans on such an important night is a great motivation. And I can’t wait for the fight. We’re ready. We have a plan ready, and we are going to do our job. We are going to put on a great show on September 15.”

Third time’s the charm for Gonzalez?

When Gonzalez enters the ring against López it will be the third time he challenges for a world title. Previously, he lost unanimous decisions to Stevenson and Navarrete in attempts to win the WBO featherweight title. Gonzalez now looks to finally become a world champion with a win over López.

“I am thankful to Top Rank that I am receiving another shot at the world title,” said Gonzalez. “I plan on taking full advantage of this opportunity and fulfilling my dream. López is an excellent champion, but I’m coming to Texas with every intention on hearing the words, ‘And new!’”

Will López continue his reign as a featherweight world champion? Or, will Gonzalez finally fulfill his dream on his third attempt for a title? Boxing fans will finally find out on Friday, September 15.
