Lightweight contender Garcia furious again at Golden Boy

For the second time in two months, a prominent fighter is upset with Golden Boy Promotions and Oscar De La Hoya. And now, the question is: will Ryan Garcia look to exit his deal with them?

In the aftermath of the debacle Saturday in Carson, California, where the unbeaten lightweight contender from California was left without a fight because to his scheduled opponent got arrested, Garcia is most upset with how Golden Boy isn’t helping him.

First, here’s a breakdown of what happened. Garcia’s scheduled opponent, contender Avery Sparrow of Philadelphia, was taken into custody by U.S. Marshals Friday morning on a felony warrant in Pennsylvania. Next, Golden Boy tried to salvage a fight for Garcia on Saturday night’s card shown on the DAZN streaming service, as the co-main event.

They wanted Garcia to fight veteran lightweight Romero Duno,, who was fighting on the undercard already.

Garcia’s camp balked about the matchup, in part, because they wanted more money for the switch. So, there was no fight for Garcia.

Well, Monday night, the fighter went on the “P.R. Offensive,” again, after the L.A. Times published an item Monday evening, where Oscar De La Hoya was trying to do damage control.

In the Times article De La Hoya not only tried to put spin on his relationship with Middleweight Champion, Canelo Alvarez, which was damaged when Golden Boy failed to secure an opponent for him by August. And then, the IBF stripped Alvarez of his recently won version of the Middleweight Championship.

Alvarez took to social media last month blasting Golden Boy and had a face to face meeting with De La Hoya to clear the air.

Then, when the subject of Garcia and the canceled fight Saturday was brought up to De La Hoya, he said that he had spoken to fighter and had these comments to the Times Monday night:

“Ryan has a lot of voices in his ear right now,” De La Hoya said. “That’s fine. I’ve been through it myself but it’s unfortunate because the miscommunication isn’t between us, it’s between his people. We’re going to have an emergency meeting to get everything resolved and we’re going to move on. We’re fine.

“Is he my best young fighter? No. Maybe next to Vergil Ortiz. Vergil Ortiz is the real deal. Ryan is in a very unique situation because of his social media following (millions on Instagram). The fact that he has so many followers is great, but it hasn’t transcended over to boxing. It just hasn’t. That’s the bottom line.

“So how do we do that? He has to win a world title. And who knows how to get him there? I do. Don’t listen to all these voices in your ear telling you, ‘Hey, you have 3 million followers, you’re supposed to be getting paid this much.’ Don’t listen to them. Just trust the process and you will get there.”

Well, Garcia quickly refuted on Twitter late Monday night that De La Hoya had never spoken with him, since the mess of this past weekend and his fight being cancelled:

And further, Garcia made it clear that he’s ready to be released from his Golden Boy deal rather than be treated like he has been recently:

It is believed that Golden Boy was going to showcase Garcia on the Alvarez-Sergey Kovalev upcoming Light Heavyweight title Showdown on November 2nd in Las Vegas. That fight will be officially announced with a press conference Wednesday. Allegedly, Garcia would be pitted against Duno, who won his fight on Saturday night’s DAZN

However, with the latest developments and the fact that Garcia feels like, once again, Golden Boy is either misrepresenting or outright lying about trying to help him, Garcia and De La Hoya / GBP maybe for a nasty showdown about him being let out of his deal.
