Wood gets set to defend his secondary version of the 126 lb. championship having won it an upset over China’s Xu Can last Summer. In an action packed back and forth battle held on the grounds of the Matchroom Headquarters 31st, Wood overwhelmed a worn down Can late in the fight.
Ahead comfortably on the cards entering the 12th round, Wood connected with a hard right dropping the Chinese champ. Can rose before the mandatory eight count, but a multi-power shot combo of punches along the ropes forces a stoppage with under :20 remaining in the bout. The win improving Wood to 24-2 with 14 KO’s and eventually leading to him getting a long term promotional deal with Matchroom and Eddie Hearn.
And, that has paid off on the bout being just days from St. Patrick’s Day against the Irish former Olympic Bronze Medalist Conlan. He fought the next week in August of 2021 headlining in his hometown of Belfast.

And, Conlan scored an impressive, one-sided 12 round decision of T.J. Doheny to remain unbeaten at 16-0, 8 KOs and gave him the “Interim Champion” title from the WBA at Featherweight.
Now, He and Wood will square off for the WBA secondary hardware, as American Leo Santa Cruz is still the reigning World champ for the WBA. However, that won’t matter to the fired up crowd at the sold out Motorpoint Arena in Nottingham tonight that wants to see Wood look to hand Conlan his first pro defeat.
A veteran broadcaster of over 25 years, T.J. has been a fight fan longer than that! He’s the host of the “Big Fight Weekend” podcast and will go “toe to toe” with anyone who thinks that Marvin Hagler beat Sugar Ray Leonard or that Tyson, Lennox Lewis or Deontay Wilder could have beaten Ali!
