Jeremias Ponce On Minnesota Title Bout- Didn’t Come On Vacation

Coming up tonight in Minneapolis, MN, unbeaten Argentine 140 lb. contender Jermias Ponce will battle Puerto Rican KO artist Subriel Matias in a scheduled 12 rounder main event for Showtime/PBC.

And, the 30-0, 20 KOs Ponce made clear Friday that he didn’t come to the “Great White North” of Minnesota for any other reason than become a world champ.

“I didn’t come here on vacation. I want everyone to see that I’m here to win and prove that I’m the best. It’s going to be an outstanding fight. The fans are going to love it. We’re both winners and we both came here to win. You’re going to see an all-out battle,” Ponce told the media at the weigh-in.

“I’m very proud to write a new chapter in the Puerto Rico vs. Argentina rivalry. I’m looking forward to showing everybody what Argentina can do inside the ring on Saturday night. I’m going for the knockout.”

It wont be easy for Ponce, as he battles the 18-1, 18 KOs hard hitting veteran Matias, who is equally geared up for a chance to a world champ. The two are seeking to win the title vacated by former undisputed champ Josh Taylor of Scotland.

Beating Matias Won’t Be Easy

As for Matias, he also spoke Friday at the weigh in about his part in the Puerto Rico-Argentina fighter rivalry,

“I’m 30 years old and to this day, I don’t know what the canvas feels like. I’m going to be the one knocking him out. I told my mom ever since I was 12 or 13 years old that I was going to make her proud and become a world champion. This is my chance,” Matias said.

“It would be very exciting for me to win this fight by knockout, and I think that’s the way it’s going. The ‘Orgullo de Maternillo’ is going to win by knockout before the seventh round.”

The bout is the culmination of a scheduled triple header on Showtime starting at 9 p.m. Eastern from the Armory in Minneapolis. And, the winner of Matias-Ponce will be in position to look towards a unification bout at junior welterweight later in 2023.
