Jaime Munguía Holds Media Day Ahead of John Ryder Clash

Former super welterweight champion Jaime Munguía (42-0, 33 KOs) spoke to the press on Tuesday ahead of his upcoming clash on Jan. 27.

The Tijuana native takes on Englishman John Ryder (32-6, 18 KOs) in a super middleweight clash at the Footprint Center in Phoenix, AZ. Golden Boy Promotions are promoting the event in association with Zanfer Boxing and Matchroom Boxing. The card will be available on DAZN.

Munguía and De La Hoya Discuss Ryder Fight

“I am thankful to Golden Boy and to Zanfer for this opportunity,” said Munguía at the event. “Ryder is a great opponent and I know that this fight will open many doors.”

“I am not desperate for a knockout of John Ryder. I feel like I have the capabilities and I am fully prepared and trained to knock him out. If it happens, it will happen naturally.“

“The future starts today,” said promoter Oscar De La Hoya. “Jaime has a tough challenge ahead of him, and with the addition of Freddie Roach in his corner, we hope that he can do the job that Canelo couldn’t. We are very proud of Jaime Munguía and we expect a great 2024 for him.“

Munguía Links Up With New Trainer

Earlier this year, it was reported that boxing legend Erik Morales would no longer be training Munguía. He will, however, remain as an advisor to the Munguía team. Roach is now in the corner of the Mexican and his first assignment will be against Ryder.

“Jaime Munguía is a really good puncher,” said Roach at the media day. “He trains really hard every day. He’s ready to go 12 rounds any day of the week.”

Munguía last fought in June this year in a fight of the year candidate against Sergiy Derevyanchenko. That bout saw him drop the Ukrainian in round 12 before winning via a close unanimous decision.

Ryder was last in the ring on May 6 in a clash against Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez. He went down in round five before losing a unanimous decision near the hometown of the undisputed super middleweight champion.
