David Benavidez Agrees to Face Undefeated Fighter in Early 2025 Showdown

The light heavyweight division will witness a generational fight on October 12 between Artur Beterbiev and Dmitry Bivolin Saudi Arabia as these two titans clash for the undisputed crown. It now appears another intriguing fight at 175 pounds has been agreed to, with WBC interim champ David Benavidez (29-0, 24 KOs) set to battle David Morrell (11-0, 9 KOs).

Benavidez Confirms Morrell Showdown

Benavidez-Morrell have agreed on terms to fight each other in the main event of a Premier Boxing Champions Prime Video pay-per-view card, with Dan Rafael revealing via his Fight Freaks Unite substack that sources involved have told him the fight could be on Jan. 25 or in February.

Rafael further reveals that the plan is to have the co-feature bout as a rematch between WBA junior welterweight titlist Jose “Rayo” Valenzuela and Isaac “Pitbull” Cruz. The Mexican fighter had the contractual right to an immediate rematch with Valenzuela if he lost.

Benavidez spoke on the fight via his Instagram and said: “There was a lot of names on the table but I wanted to give my fans the best fight possible,” Benavidez wrote on social media. “I reached out to David Morrell and his team to make this happen and we got the contract done. This fight really gonna be a banger!!! 2 of the best in the division and 2 titles on the line, LFG!!!!! Date & Location to be announced shortly.”

Benavidez vs. Morrell Negotiations

A Benavidez-Morrell fight has plenty of intrigue with both undefeated and heavy-handed. Rafael also reveals there were discussions about Benavidez taking on Jesse Hart on the Gervonta Davis-Lamont Roach Jr. undercard on Dec. 14. Instead, “The Monster” has chosen a more fan-friendly fight.

Morrell’s team confirmed to Fight Freaks Unite they had agreed to the Benavidez fight, with the paperwork currently being finalised. These two undefeated fighters were linked to a fight that was rumoured for November 2023 at super middleweight, before Benavidez declined the fight due to a disagreement with promoter Sampson Lewkowicz and chose to fight Demetrius Andrade, who he dismantled in six rounds.
