Chris Eubank Jr Opens Up on The Diary of a CEO
Near the beginning of the podcast, Barlett asks Chris Eubank Jr if he felt normal on fight night, as he didn’t seem to be himself: “You’re very observant,” replied Eubank Jr.
“There are a lot of things going on in my life that no one knows about and that no one will ever know about. As a fighter, you have to do things that nobody else could imagine doing, and no one else is willing to do. I did that to be able to get into the ring that night.
“You also have the navigation of weight loss. Rehydration restrictions. These are all things that I was having to deal with on top of all the outside stuff. Yes, there were maybe certain aspects of me as an athlete that wernt 100%. But the truth of it is, so many fighters go into fights with issues, whether it’s injuries, whether it’s illness, whether it’s mental problems.”
Chris Eubank Jr Discusses Hospital Stay
Revealing about his time in hospital, Eubank Jr said: “After the fight, my face is swollen up. That’s not from the punches, that’s from severe dehydration.”
He added: “That’s what I was suffering from most in hospital. Complete dehydration. It got to a point where I was in the hospital, and I was lying in the bed, and they had drips, IV drips to get all the liquid into your system, and my bladder was full. Like, I really needed to pee. For about 2 hours, I’d get up and go to the toilet, I’d stand over the toilet, and it would not go, and I’m dying to go. That’s how dehydrated I was.”
Revealing the severity of his stay in hospital: “I’m feeling sorry for myself. I got my family around me. Some of them are crying. This is so bad. I’m lying there, I’ve got my mask on, oxygen mask, I can hear everything that’s going on,” said Chris Eubank Jr.
He continued detailing this feeling: “Get me the morphine, get me the morphine. They can’t get you the morphine until they sign off on some stuff, so I’m waiting, and then I hear the doctor say, ‘We have to operate on him now, otherwise he’s gonna die.'”
“I heard that from the other room (next to me), and I thought, my god, I’m great. I’m blessed. I should not be feeling sorry for myself at all. I knew I was in pain. But there’s a guy next to me who’s about to die. What am I doing, feeling bad for myself? Complaining about a headache and a cut eye. He’s about to die. They wheeled him off, and I don’t know what happened to him.”
Whatever your feelings are towards Chris Eubank Jr. and Conor Benn, and the way the fight was made, it’s impossible not to applaud both men for the fight they delivered on April 26. Eubank Jr had the emotion of reconnecting with his dad, the pressures of making weight, and understandably, still grieving for his brother, Sebastian Eubank, who passed away in 2021. Eubank Jr came through it all to triumph on fight night.
