Canelo Alvarez Played Santa To Needy In Mexico Tuesday

Undisputed Super Middleweight World champ Canelo Alvarez was busy just days before Christmas, but it wasn’t part of his boxing regiment or preparing for his next title fight. This, as on Tuesday Alvarez decided to give back to some needy children in his home country of Mexico.

Canelo arranged for and participated in a gift giving event for hundreds of kids in the town of Nuevo Leon, and that even included this video of Alvarez driving the 18-wheeler rig of toys into the parking lot of the facility where they would be distributed to the children.

A little while later Alvarez was photographed around some of the kids, who were fortunate to be around the Mexican icon just days before Christmas.

With the holiday cheer in full swing, it will soon be 2022 and the boxing world wonders if Alvarez will actually follow through and move all the way up to the Cruiserweight division to challenge WBC champion Ilunga ‘Junior’ Makabu?

Makabu, 28-2, 25 KOs, won the WBC 190 lb. title in January of 2020 by a decision win over Michal Cieslak in Zaire. He has since defended it once, post Covid 19 outbreak, in December of last year when he stopped Olanrewaju Durodola in the 7th round.

Now, Canelo and advisor / trainer Eddy Reynoso lobbied the WBC at their convention in November to have the four division world champ be given Makabu’s next defense. However, the details have not yet been finalized.

There is also some belief that Alvarez may choose instead defend his Undisputed 168 lb. championships on the “Cinco de Mayo” weekend in Las Vegas in early May. And, it would make sense for him to continue at that division after scoring emphatic wins over WBO champ Billy Joe Saunders and IBF titleholder Caleb Plant earlier this year.

For now, Alvarez gets to “enjoy the spoils” of being one of the great champions of the modern era in Mexican boxing history. And, that includes using his celebrity and vast resources to give back to those less fortunate at Christmas.
