David Benavidez Desires Move to Light Heavyweight

David Benavidez (28-0, 24 KOs) has enjoyed a successful 2023, defeating Caleb Plant and Demetrius Andrade. Following his destruction of Andrade, the “Mexican Monster” has reiterated his desire to face Canelo: “I think it was just a reminder, to let everybody know who the fuck the real champ at 168 is. They wanna see me versus Canelo and that’s what we want, too.” Benavidez has previously spoken about his desire to move to light heavyweight, and Artur Beterbiev has spoken about this and a potential fight with the Nevada resident in an interview with Sean Zittel of FightHype.com, where he said: “If he (Benavidez) wants this fight, no problem.”

Situation at Light Heavyweight

Dmitry Bivol and Beterbiev currently rule the division, and both would be targets for Benavidez if he moves up, with the Khasavyurt-born fighter holding the WBC, IBF, and WBO 175-pound titles. During the interview with Sean Zittel, the Montreal resident spoke about not underestimating Smith and that he hasn’t spent any time – thinking about fighting other opponents in the future.

Beterbiev has a 100% fight record, knocking out every opponent, including Anthony Yarde. At 38, it’s hard to see the big punching Montreal resident fighting on for too much longer – but if he can overcome Smith, a potential future fight with Benavidez is a mouth-watering prospect for the boxing world.
