Social barbs flew between Ryan Garcia- Leonard Ellerbe

Boxing is poised for a return of postponed and potential new fights is on the horizon for later in the Summer. And, for Gervonta Davis, one of the most intriguing names in the lighter weight divisions and his promoter, Leonard Ellerbe, they both love to both talk a good game.

So, it wasn’t surprising on Sunday, when Ellerbe got into a social media back and forth with unbeaten lightweight Contender, Ryan Garcia about him potentially meeting Davis down the road.

First, That got the always outspoken Ellerbe, who heads up Mayweather Promotions and sets Davis’s fights, responded to a fan’s tweet about Davis possibly fighting Garcia in the near future:

In short order, the unbeaten 21-0 Garcia, who last was seen knocking out Freddy Fonseca with one punch in February, had this response about not being ready to step in the ring with unbeaten hard punching Davis:

The “Twitter spat” continued for a couple of more exchanges, with the upshot being that Ellerbe/Mayweather Promotions and Davis are only focused on his next possible bout (not to be with Garcia).

Davis, 23-0, 22 KOs, last fought in December in Atlanta in a tough battle with veteran Yuriorkis Gamboa, where he eventually scored an 12th round TKO and captured the vacant WBA 135 lb. title. And, it has been widely speculated that he will next be fighting WBA Super Featherweight Champion Leo Santa Cruz either later this summer or in the early fall and probably on Showtime pay-per-view.

The Davis-Santa Cruz fight had been tentatively set for June in Los Angeles before the Covid 19 pandemic shutdown sports across the globe.

Ultimately, Davis would like to also get into the mix with Unified WBO, WBC Lightweight champion Vasiliy Lomachenko or young unbeaten IBF 135 lb. champion, Teofimo Lopez of New York.

However, Lopez and Lomachenko are slated to fight their postponed clash for three of the four Lightweight World titles later in September.

Although it has not been announced, it is believed that Garcia will next headline a Golden Boy Promotions July 4th show against an opponent still to be confirmed and probably in California with no fans.

And obviously, Garcia and Golden Boy would love to have him get a shot at the winter of Loma-Lopez potentially, as well, probably early in 2021.

For now, Sunday’s exchange on keyboards was simply entertaining hype between a promoter of one fighter and a guy who wants to fight that fighter.
