British Heavyweight Whyte reveals previous offer to Andy Ruiz

With uncertainty as to whether his postponed May fight with Alexander Povetkin will even be fought this summer, British heavyweight contender Dillian Whyte is making sure that everyone knows that he originally was trying to first get a deal with former unified title holder, American Andy Ruiz.

The two traded barbs on social media Sunday, beginning with Ruiz contending that Whyte didn’t make a substantial offer to him for the two to battle this Spring:

Ruiz shot to start over with his shocking 7th round TKO upset last June of Unified Heavyweight Champ Anthony Joshua of England, capturing the WBA, IBF and WBO belts. However, Joshua, as the more experienced and skilled former champion, easily outboxed and defeated a 15 lb. heavier Ruiz in their rematch in December taking away the brief fame for the Californian.

Whyte (27-1) has been trying to get himself a World title shot for years, after losing by 7th round TKO himself to Joshua in December of 2015.

As we wrote in March, Whyte and Matchroom Boxing promoter, Eddie Hearn, made no secret that, in general terms, they had made a large offer to Ruiz and his promoter, Tom Brown of TGB Promotions. However, Ruiz had declined and that’s why they moved on and scheduled the Povetkin fight.

So, that brings us back to Sunday evening, and Whyte revealing the actual private email on Twitter sent by  Hearn to Brown making the lucrative offer in writing that apparently Ruiz had turned down:

The tweet is not only verification of the offer, but also intriguingly, that Whyte was apparently even offering to come fight Ruiz in the United States. Whyte has fought all, but one of his pro bouts in the U.K. and never in America.

Meanwhile, the White-Povetkin fight was slated for Manchester, England ,on May 3rd, but that fight was halted along with the rest of the sport worldwide by the COVID-19 pandemic.

It is believed that Hearn and Matchroom would still like to stage the bout in July at a location to be determined, either in the U.K. or Europe.

As for Ruiz, it’s well-known that he did not take his training seriously for the rematch with Joshua last Winter, and he currently has credibility problems on trying to get another quality fight when boxing resumes in the U.S.

And, he now looks foolish for saying that he wasn’t offered $5 million to host Whyte in U.S. fight, when obviously, he was offered it.
