Porter- Ugas and Bivol- Smith Jr headline Saturday double feature
The countdown is underway for two significant title fights both in the United States on opposite parts of the continent. Shawn “Showtime” Porter will defend his version of the Welterweight championship against Cuban Challenger Yordenis Ugas will be in Los Angeles.
Meanwhile Russian light heavyweight World Champion Dmitri Bivol will face American Challenger Joe Smith Jr. in a 12-round battle across the country at the Turning Stone Resort in New York.
Both fights are part of this week’s Big Fight Weekend podcast preview.
Hose TJ Rives talks first with Keith idec of Boxingscene.com after Keith wrote about the new Gennady Golovkin deal with DAZN promotions for his own fights and other fight cards that he will promote for upcoming fights over the next couple of years. Idec also talks about when Golovkin and Canelo Alvarez may end up back in the ring for a third Showdown. Idec is also covering Bivol-Smith battle for the Light Heavyweight championship and gives his thoughts on the matchup.
Then, Marquis John’s of Bigfightweekend.com is on the show talking about the Porter-Ugas fight and the ramifications in the Welterweight division. Particularly, if Porter wins, will he get his rematch with Keith Thurman who defeated him three years ago by decision?
T.J. and Marquis also reminisce about Mike Tyson’s pro debut in the first week of March of 1985 and also a spectacular welterweight of the late 70s and early 80s, Wilfred Benitez, and the Pro boxing record he set that still stands today.
