Nine years have passed since Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Conor McGregor

Floyd Mayweather Jr. (50-0, 27 KOs) and Conor McGregor (0-1, 0 KOs) fought on this day nine years ago.

Their 12-round super featherweight contest was highly anticipated, as evidenced by the fact that it generated 4.3 million pay-per-view buys in the United States alone. The fight headlined a card at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, NV. Neither man has fought in a sanctioned boxing bout since.

Nine years after Mayweather and McGregor fought each other, Big Fight Weekend takes a look at the fight itself and what both men have done in the years since.

Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Conor McGregor: The fight itself

McGregor went after his opponent early on, looking to land his power shots. Mayweather adopted a patient approach, throwing few punches. Little of substance landed in the early stages of the contest. Mayweather’s defensive prowess allowed him to avoid getting hurt with whatever was coming his way. This was to be expected, however, given the significant gap in boxing experience between the two.

Things started to change in round four. Mayweather became more active and found success closing the distance. McGregor became easier to hit as he tired. If the gulf in ability was not evident before, it was now. Mayweather pressed forward and landed a variety of power shots. McGregor’s punches appeared to have very little on them.

It all came to an end at 1:05 of round 10. A barrage of shots to the head sent McGregor stumbling around the ring, causing referee Robert Byrd to put an end to proceedings with the Irishman still standing. Mayweather’s patient approach paid dividends in the end.

What have Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Conor McGregor done since?

Mayweather has not fought in a sanctioned professional bout since his victory over McGregor, but has participated in a number of exhibitions. Tenshin Nasukawa, Logan Paul, and John Gotti III are just some of the individuals he has fought in exhibitions. Mayweather was scheduled to return to professional boxing against Manny Pacquiao in a bout that was to be aired on Netflix. However, the bout has been postponed indefinitely as the American deals with various disputes.

McGregor returned to mixed martial arts, a sport where he is currently 22-7. He has lost four out of five MMA fights since the bout against Mayweather. McGregor’s only foray into boxing since 2017 was a four-round exhibition against Michael McGrane in 2019. The bout took place at Crumlin Boxing Club (a gym McGregor used to box at) and ended in a draw.

McGregor has been embroiled in several controversies and has been charged with various offences over the past decade. Among them are a jury finding that he had sexually assaulted a woman in 2018, ordering him to pay €250,000 in damages. He was arrested in 2019 after attacking a fan in Miami Beach, later being released on a $5,000 bond. In 2022, McGregor was also arrested in Dublin and charged with driving offences. He was given a two-year driving ban and a five-month suspended sentence.
