Anthony Olascuaga set for world title defence in San Francisco’s Civic Center Plaza
Anthony Olascuaga’s (12-1, 9 KOs) next world title defence has been officially announced.
The WBO flyweight world champion is set to take on Andy Dominguez (13-1, 6 KOs) in the main event of a card promoted by Sampson Boxing and iVB. It will take place on July 11 at the Civic Center Plaza in San Francisco, CA. Fight fans around the world will be able to catch the action live on YouTube.
The announcement was made via press release on Wednesday. A press conference to promote the card will take place on May 7.
Undercard for Anthony Olascuaga vs. Andy Dominguez also announced
The press release also mentioned five other fights that would be occurring on July 11. Vito Mielnicki Jr. (23-1, 13 KOs, 1 NC) will take on Gerardo Vergara (21-1, 14 KOs) in a 10-round middleweight contest. Charly Suarez (18-0, 10 KOs, 1 NC) is set to face Manuel Ávila (25-2-1, 9 KOs) in a 10-round super featherweight clash.
Gurgen Hovhannisyan (10-0, 9 KOs) will take on Uila Mauʻu (10-0, 9 KOs) in a 10-round heavyweight bout. Oscar Bonifacino (4-0-1, 3 KOs) is set to face Raul Escudero (4-0, 0 KOs) in a six-round featherweight contest. Rounding out the card will be Blake Binskin (3-0, 0 KOs) against Dante Ibarra (3-1, 3 KOs) in a six-round super featherweight bout.
In addition to Sampson Boxing and iVB, Christy Martin and Paco Presents Boxing will also be involved with the promotion of the card.
Bold claims made in press release
The press release claimed that the event will seek to break the record for “the largest crowd ever assembled for a boxing event.” According to Guinness World Records, the record to break is 135,132. That was the number of people who attended Tony Zale vs. Billy Pryor in 1941 at Juneau Park in Milwaukee, WI. Zale won the fight, that was free to attend, by ninth round knockout.
Earlier this year, iVB claimed that they were looking to break the record but did not announce which fight would headline at the Civic Center Plaza. It remains unclear how exactly they seek to achieve this with the card they have put together. Fight fans can expect further developments in the coming weeks.
