On Saturday, January 31, at Madison Square Garden in New York City, Shakur Stevenson produced a dominant performance in defeating Teofimo Lopez by unanimous decision. This win on DAZN Pay-Per-View made Stevenson the new lineal and WBO super lightweight champion.

Stevenson vs Lopez was highly anticipated, and Shakur rose to the occasion and boxed well throughout, working impressively off his jab, controlling the tempo and distance from the first bell to the last.

Lopez had his moments, but they were only fleeting ones, and Stevenson deserved his win, with scorecards of 119-109 x3.

Shakur’s speed and accuracy helped him dominate Lopez and left many comparing him to the boxing greats.

When asked if Shakur Stevenson was the new Floyd Mayweather, Roy Jones Jr said: “He is, because he ain’t taking many chances. He ain’t giving guys no chance to beat him.

“But the difference with him is, he’s fighting everybody. He not ducking and dodging. He’s fighting everybody; that’s a little bit different. He could be Floyd as far as not being beaten in his era, but he a little bit different to Floyd as he’s willing to take on the biggest challenges.

“But he also getting the right money for it early in his career.”

There’s no doubting Shakur Stevenson belongs in the pound-for-pound conversation. Despite him now being a four-division world champion, it feels premature to talk about him in the same breath as Floyd Mayweather. However, Shakur continues to dazzle and defy weight claims and looks destined to become one of the greatest fighters.
