When asked to name his top five fighters of all time, Lewis said:
“Oh man. I would say Muhammad Ali, Jack Johnson, Hagler, George Foreman, Joe Louis…there you go.”
Lewis was then asked whether he would put himself among those names, and the Brit said: “Yeah, I’m in that room. I’m definitely in that room.”
Looking at Lennox Lewis’s elite five
When looking at Lewis’s list, it’s understandable that it’s loaded with heavyweights. Muhammad Ali (56-5, 37 KOs) is an obvious choice for many, with his exceptional speed, ring IQ, and cultural impact, ensuring his legacy is secure.
Joe Louis (66-3, 52 KOs) reigned supreme at heavyweight for an incredible 12 years, known for his heavy hands and brilliant combination punching.
Next on Lewis’s list was Jack Johnson (53-11-8, 33 KOs), who became the first African-American heavyweight world champion. Johnson was a brilliant counterpuncher with exceptional ring IQ.
Lewis selected the legendary George Foreman (76-5, 68 KOs). Foreman had terrifying power and was exceptional at cutting the ring off. He was involved in many memorable matchups, but will arguably be remembered for his memorable 10th-round KO of Michael Moorer to become the oldest heavyweight champion in history, at 45.
The only non-heavyweight that Lennox Lewis picked was Marvin Hagler (62-3-2, 52 KOs). Marvellous was a brilliant switch-hitter who carried fight-ending power in both hands. His granite chin enabled him to stay competitive in fights, and with that single-shot knockout power and great conditioning, he could always turn a fight his way.
