The Callum Smith vs David Morrell WBO purse bid for the interim title was scheduled for December 4, after they applied an extension to the original November 18 date. The WBO have now announced that the purse bid has been cancelled following the confirmation that both sides have now reached an agreement for the light-heavyweight fight.

Callum Smith vs David Morrell purse bid cancelled following agreement

The WBO ordered Smith (31-2, 22 KOs) and Morrell (12-1, 9 KOs) to face each other for the interim belt following the Cuban’s split decision win on July 12 against the tough Russian Imam Khataev.

Matchroom Boxing, who promote Smith, and Warrior Boxing, who promote Morrell, have been locked in talks for some time now, which appear to have now been fruitful with the agreement reached.

The WBO confirmed in a statement that they had received written confirmation from both sides regarding the agreement:

“The World Boxing Organisation (WBO) hereby announces that it has received written confirmation from Matchroom Boxing and TGB Promotions/Warriors Boxing indicating that the parties have reached an agreement regarding the WBO Light Heavyweight Championship bout between Callum Smith and David Morrell.

“Accordingly, the purse bid scheduled for today at the WBO Main Offices is terminated effective immediately.

“At the appropriate time, the parties will formally announce the fight date, venue and promoter of record.”

Callum Smith vs David Morrell

Smith brings a wealth of experience. He possesses an impressive jab, plenty of power, and a determination, which he showed in his action-packed win against Joshua Buatsi last time out. His height and reach are vital assets, enabling him to control the distance and tempo in his bouts.

Morrell enjoyed an impressive amateur career before stepping into the professional code. His excellent hand speed and technical ability make him a tough opponent for anyone. He lost to David Benavidez but gained plaudits from many regarding his performance. Morrell is adept at fighting on the outside and inside.

Whoever finds their range first will be tough to dislodge, but should both meet on the inside, this could be a firefight, with both throwing bombs. The 2026 boxing calnedar is fast shaping up to be one of the best.
