Lamont Roach Sr talks potential Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis rematch

On November 14, at the Kaseya Center in Miami, Florida, Jake Paul (12-1, 7 KOs) vs Gervonta Davis will headline a Most Valuable Promotions fight card live on Netflix.

This 10-round exhibition has attracted considerable criticism, primarily due to the major weight difference and Tank skipping past the rumoured Lamont Roach rematch. Lamont Roach Sr has spoken to Fight Hub TV, giving his honest opinion on Davis and where Team Roach’s focus lies.

Lamont Roach Sr shares his thoughts on Gervonta Davis ahead of Nov. 14 exhibition

The Gervonta Davis vs Jake Paul exhibition has certainly been a talking point since it was officially announced, though most of it hasn’t been positive.

It was hoped we would see Roach Jr (25-1-2, 10 KOs) get his rematch against Gervonta Davis (30-0-1, 28 KOs), following their controversial majority decision draw earlier this year. Roach Jr out-hussled the WBA champion for the majority of the fight, with Tank taking a controversial knee in round nine, which went unpunished during and after the bout.

Following the news of the exhibition, Team Roach has decided not to wait around any longer and will step up in weight to face Issac ‘Pitbull’ Cruz (28-3-1, 18 KOs) for the WBC interim super lightweight title on December 6.

Talking to Fight Hub TV, Roach Sr made it clear they are not waiting around for a potential Tank rematch:

“We checked him out. And so, if that’s the case , we checked him out. And if he retire, he retire. We’ll wish him the best in his retired life. 

“I don’t think we get it (rematch), being realistic. But if we do, we’ll see. We’re not focused on it. Like I said in the press conference, looking for next stars out here. We could be the next American star out here. We got goals to accomplish, and we not focused on that, and that is not in our mindset right now. We’re focused on Isaac Cruz, and there’s plenty of options after that fight,” said Roach Sr.

Recently, Lamont Roach Jr spoke to the media, discussing Gervonta Davis vs Jake Paul:

“He went and took a circus show fight, and you know, he said he was gonna retire. I believe him.”

When asked why Roach believes Jake Paul vs Tank is a circus show fight, he said: 

“It’s just for s***s and giggles. Jake Paul’s f***ing 200 pounds, and he’s whatever he is, so…”

Roach was also asked if he believes Davis has ducked him: 

“For sure, you can call a spade a spade, for sure,” said Roach.

“We’re contracted to fight, and you go and take another fight, you breach that contract, and you go take another fight, that’s a clear duck, added Roach.”
