George Groves identifies potential ‘bogey man’ opponent for Moses Itauma
Moses Itauma (13-0, 11 KOs) is a name on the tip of many tongues in the world of boxing. His exceptional blend of speed and power has seen him bulldoze his way through every opponent so far.
After his devastating KO of Dillian Whyte on August 16, 2025, speculation has grown over what will be next for Itauma.
The unbeaten Queensberry Promotions fighter recently rejected the opportunity to face Frank Sanchez in an IBF final eliminator. This has led to rumours that he could face either David Adeleye or Michael Hunter.
Following this news, George Groves has spoken to Poker Strategy about a potential showdown between Moses Itauma and Michael Hunter (24-1-2, 17 KOs).
What’s next for rising heavyweight star Moses Itauma?
Itauma has quickly risen through the heavyweight ranks since winning his professional debut in 2023 against Marcel Bode. More recently, the Slovakian-born Brit has beaten Demsey McKean and Mike Balogun before the Whyte demolition.
After the decision of Team Itauma to forgo the IBF title final eliminator opportunity, the Adeleye and Hunter rumours have emerged, and when talking to Poker Strategy, George Groves revealed he believes Hunter could be the fighter that takes Itauma into the trenches:
“He’s a quality operator, Michael Hunter. He’s boxed at a high level for a long time and has got some surprising wins on his record. He never really got picked up, never really got promoted correctly, I think he never got a big shot at a major title. So he could be a bogey man, he might be the one to give Itauma a few rounds.”
Michael Hunter the heavyweight ‘bogey man’
Calling Hunter a ‘bogey man’ is not an exaggeration. Since his victory over Martin Bakole in 2018, the Van Nuys native has suffered from inactivity and a lack of well-known opponents willing to face him.
A disappointing draw against Jerry Forrest in 2021 was followed by a sustained period of inactivity, which saw him return in 2023, where he defeated Miguel Cubos and has since won his three subsequent fights.
Hunter has impressive ring IQ, fast hands, and swift movement. He carries power in his right hand and mixes his shots well.
He’s an accurate puncher, and will be confident he can not only drag Itauma into the trenches, but ultimately derail his progress.
It remains to be seen who is next for Moses Itauma, but it appears it will be his toughest test.
