Report- WBC champ Deontay Wilder rematch date with Ortiz set

Not to be outdone by the current press tour of the last 72 hours for Andy Ruiz’s Heavyweight Title rematch with Anthony Joshua coming to December, WBC Champ Deontay Wilder has apparently firmed up his rematch date with Cuban contender, Luis Ortiz.

Boxingscene, senior writer and columnist, Keith Idec, reported Friday afternoon that Wilder and Ortiz have finally agreed on the important details, including date and venue for November:

The long-discussed rematch this summer will take place two weeks prior to Ruiz and Joshua rematching in Saudi Arabia on Saturday, December 7th.

Wilder (40-0-1 with 39 KOs) and the Cuban Ortiz fought a wild battle in March of 2018 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. Wilder scored a 5th round knocked down, but then was in the most trouble of his entire career, when Ortiz (32-1 26 KOs) rallied in the 7th round staggering Wilder with a series of punches.

Although Wilder never went down, he was clearly wobbled and in danger of getting knocked down or worse. To his credit, Wilder weathered the storm, battled back and knocked Ortiz down, again, in the 10th round with a barrage of right hands. Ortiz rose fatigued and wobbly and Wilder finished him off a short time later with a right uppercut and a 10th round TKO.

Wilder’s latest defense was a first-round, one-punch destruction of WBC number one contender Dominic Brezeale at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

It is believed that Wilder will follow through with a rematch against English heavyweight Contender and former Undisputed champ, Tyson Fury, in February. Fury put on a tremendous performance in December of last year where many believed he should have won a decision against Wilder.

However, Wilder’s dramatic 12th round knockdown helped sway the judges with one of them giving him the fight and the other scoring it a draw.

Wilder wanted to rematch Fury this summer, but Fury walked away from a lucrative offer for a second fight with the Alabama-born champ. And, he instead chose to sign with Bob Arum and Top Rank Boxing on a long-term deal.

Arum had hoped to lure Wilder to come and fight Fury on the ESPN platforms, but that did not happen. So for now, Fury is stuck fighting virtual unknowns, like when he meets Swedish heavyweight Otto Wallin next Saturday at the same venue where Wilder and Ortiz will apparently fight two months later.
