Amanda Serrano vs Katie Taylor 3 Fight Recap

After the completion of a stacked undercard, it was finally time for Amanda Serrano vs Katie Taylor 3. The noise at MSG was deafening as both fighters made their way to the ring and were introduced to the sold-out crowd.

It was a cagey opening round, with both women looking to establish their distance. Round three saw both fighters exchange flurries. Serrano (47-4-1, 31 KOs) also ended the round on top. At the beginning of round four, it was very tense inside MSG, just as it appeared in the ring, with neither throwing a lot in the first few rounds. Taylor (25-1, 6 KOs) ended the fourth round on top, likely enough for her to take the round.

The fight continued to be cagey, but when either let their hands go, the crowd erupted. The eighth round was a good one for “The Real Deal,” who picked her shots impressively, while proving defensively elusive. The last round saw Taylor land some nice combinations to take the round.

A very close fight with no huge rounds for either. Both fighters waved to their supporters and then gathered to hear the end of this historic trilogy. The scorecards read 95-95 and 97-93 x2. It wasn’t the best fight of the trilogy, but Taylor got the job done once and for all. 3-0.

Alycia Baumgardner vs Jennifer Miranda

In the co-main event of the evening, the women’s undisputed super featherweight champion Alycia Baumgardner (16-1, 7 KOs) faced Jennifer Miranda (12-1, 1 KO). It was a cagey opening round, with neither able to find their range. The second round saw Baumgardner settle, but Miranda also landed a couple of nice counter shots.

Through the first half of the fight, Miranda proved an awkward opponent for Baumgardner. The sixth round saw both throw everything at each other. Baumgardner had her moments, but the awareness and size of Miranda appeared to cause her problems throughout. “The Bomb” finished as the stronger of the two, winning by unanimous decision, with the judges’ scorecards reading 98-92 x2 and 97-93.

Alycia Baumgardner is still the women’s undisputed super featherweight champion.

Savannah Marshall vs Shadasia Green

Next up was the return of Savannah Marshall (13-2, 10 KOs), who faced Shadasia Green (16-1, 11 KOs) in an IBF/WBO women’s super middleweight unification bout. It was a cagey opening two rounds, with both trying to find their range. The cleaner work came from the Brit in the early stages.

In the fourth round, after numerous warnings, Green was deducted a point for holding. The fifth was by far Green’s best, landing some hurtful punches.

As the fight moved into the later rounds, Green fought her way back into it, winning the close-up exchanges. It was a frantic end to the fight, with Green applying pressure. Both fighters met in the middle of the ring to hear the scorecards, which read 96-93 for Marshall, while the other two read 95-94 and 96-93 for Green, awarding her the split decision victory. Green adjusted well after a difficult start, and deserved the win.

Shadasia “The Sweet Terminator” Green is the new unified IBF, WBO and Ring Magazine women’s super middleweight champion.

Ellie Scotney vs Yamileth Mercado

The first bout on the live Netflix broadcast saw Ellie Scotney (11-0, 0 KOs) face Yamileth Mercado (24-4, 5 KOs) for the unified IBF, WBO and WBC women’s super bantamweight titles. It was a good start from Scotney, who found her range quicker than her opponent.

Scotney boxed well during the first few rounds, moving well and picking her shots impressively. Her slick footwork was eye-catching throughout the first half of the fight. As the fight progressed, Scotney continued to get the better of the exchanges, proving too sharp for Mercado, who barely landed a punch of significance. It was a dominant performance from the Brit, who proved she belongs on the biggest stage. Both fighters gathered in the ring to hear the judges’ scorecards, which read 98-92 x2 and 100-90, crowning Scotney the unified IBF, WBO, WBC and Ring Magazine champion.

Cherneka Johnson vs Shurretta Metcalf

In the final bout on the preliminary card, Cherneka Johnson (18-2, 8 KOs) faced Shurretta Metcalf (14-5-1, 2 KOs) for women’s undisputed bantamweight glory. It was a good start from Johnson, who was on the front foot, landing the more significant shots in the first two rounds.

It was a dominant fourth round from the Aussie fighter, who scored a knockdown and had her opponent in all kinds of trouble after that. Metcalf did well to survive the round.

The American showed bravery but very little else and was thoroughly outworked and outclassed. At the beginning of round nine, she was checked over by the ringside physician, after which the referee waved the fight off. Metcalf was not happy, but it was a one-sided beatdown from start to finish. Australia has a new undisputed champion, and it is Cherneka ‘Sugar Neekz’ Johnson.

Chantelle Cameron vs Jessica Camara

It was the turn of the super lightweights next, with Chantelle Cameron (21-1, 8 KOs) defending her WBC interim super lightweight title against Jessica Camara (14-5-1, 3 KOs). It was a quiet opening round, but Cameron looked to find her range a little quicker.

The second round was competitive, with both fighters having their moments. The more eye-catching work came from the Canadian fighter. Both fighters continued to give it their all in the third, with big punches landing from both. When the Brit let her hands go, she looked good, but Camara kept firing back, landing big shots of her own.

It was a good eighth round from Cameron as she worked well on the inside, while her opponent seemed to tire. Cameron produced some smart work throughout the 10 rounds but would have been unhappy with how often she was caught. Her late arrival in fight week due to visa issues could have been a factor. The judges’ scorecards read 99-91, 98-92, and 99-91, all favouring Il Capo.

Ramla Ali vs Lila Furtado

Next up was Ramla Ali (10-2, 2 KOs) vs Lila Furtado (11-3, 2 KOs) in the super bantamweight division. It was a quiet opening round, with Furtado the aggressor. A much better second from Ali, who landed a big right hand that buckled the knees of her opponent.

At the halfway point, Furtado was still the aggressor, with Ali the more accurate. The fight continued in the same vein until the final bell. The judges’ scorecards read 77-75 x2 and 78-74, all in favour of Ali. Scoring the fight depends on whether you liked the pressure from Furtado or the cleaner punches from Ali.

Mary Casamassa vs Tamm Thibeault

In the opening fight of this stacked card at MSG, Mary Casamassa (6-1, 1 KO) faced Tamm Thibeault (3-0, 2 KO) in a middleweight showdown. It was a confident start from Thibeault, whose fast hands and accuracy led to a knockdown in the opening round.

The 2020 Canadian Olympian fought well at a distance and up close when needed. She rarely missed with the straight left. In the fifth round, the Canadian mixed her shots impressively and under a vicious flurry, the referee stepped in to save Casamassa, awarding Thibeault the fifth-round TKO win.
