Lomachenko will be significantly favored to add the WBC lightweight title to his collection that the WBA, the WBO and lineal lightweight champion designation, currently. He takes on Britain’s Luke Campbell who’s the WBC’s number one challenger.
The Ukrainian is also a two-time gold medalist from Beijing in ’08 in the featherweight Division and 2012 in London in the lightweight division. And, he already has professional World Titles in both the Featherweight and Junior Lightweight divisions before popping up to lightweight in May of 2018.
That’s when he defeated Colombian Jorge Linares by 10th round TKO at Madison Square Garden to capture the WBA belt. Lomachenko has since defended it twice, including against England’s Anthony Crolla, whom he dispatched in four rounds in April.
Campbell is also the former 2012 London Olympic gold medalist in the bantamweight division, and is 20 – 2 with 16 KOs to earn the number one ranked Lightweight designation by the WBC.
Campbell’s trainer, Shane McGuigan, also recently boldly theorized that his fighter will have a chance to knock Lomachenko out telling Sky Sports,
“Luke is not a come-forward pressure fighter. We have to take it out of the judges’ hands. When we win rounds we have to win them with a big margin. We have to dent him with power, and Luke definitely has the power to dent him.
“Jorge Linares put [Lomachenko] on his backside. Although it was a flash knock-down, he still stunned him. [Lomachenko] has been hurt once or twice. Salido hurt him throughout the fight and a few people caused him [problems]. We’ve got as many assets as anyone [Lomachenko] has faced.”
McGuigan continued,
“How do you negate his speed, ability and technical prowess? We have the size advantage, the power advantage. No, we’re not as quick or agile but we can take that away with range and timing.
“I am fully confident we have the ability to beat him and even knock him out.”
Of course, McGuigan isn’t the one who will have to square off with Lomachenko and try to hit him, while not getting hit.
