De La Hoya Doubts Boots Ennis Wants ‘The Man at 154’
On April 12 at the Boardwalk Hall, Atlantic City, Jaron Ennis produced a career-best performance, stopping Eimantas Stanionis and unifying the WBA, IBF and Ring Magazine titles. It was a boxing clinic from Boots, as he bossed the fight from start to finish. It appears more unification fights at welterweight are top of the wishlist for Team Ennis. A fight against Vergil Ortiz Jr was rumoured previously – but De La Hoya has cast doubt on whether Boots actually wants to face someone as dangerous as Ortiz.

De La Hoya Claims Jaron Ennis Backed Out of Vergil Ortiz Jr Fight
Speaking to a collection of media, including Fight Hub TV, De La Hoya was asked what he thinks of a potential Jaron Ennis vs Ryan Garcia fight at 147lbs: “First time I hear that. I think it’s a great fight. I think Ryan Garcia does well. Boots Ennis is a crafty, very skilful fighter. I like him. But that fight there, I think I would have to pick Ryan for the win.”
Oscar was then asked about Ennis-Ortiz, and he said: “We all know Boots doesn’t want to fight Vergil. That’s what happened right? We called them out. We had a fight (agreed), then they backtracked, so, until I see something on paper that Boots wants to fight Vergil, then I’ll believe it.”

He was then asked why he believes Ennis doesn’t want the fight: “Everybody was calling each other out then all of a sudden they pulled off.”
De La Hoya added: “Who knows what the reasons are but Vergil’s the man at 154, that’s the bottom line.
The Future
Whether Ennis can secure those desired unification fights remains to be seen. If they aren’t attainable, a move up to 154 by Boots would be a fascinating step. A clash with the undefeated Vergil Ortiz Jr. would promise fireworks, especially with the narrative that Ennis ducked Ortiz still fresh in many minds.
