Jaime Munguia Next Fight: Mexican Star’s Bold Move for Comeback

On Saturday, December 14, 2024, Bruno Surace (26-0-2, 5 KOs) stunned Jaime Munguia (44-2, 35 KOs) in the main event of the Top Rank and Zanfer Promotions fight card at the Estadio Caliente in Tijuana. Surace was knocked down in round two and was well behind in the fight when he landed a monster right hand in the sixth, knocking Munguia down who couldn’t recover. There has been plenty of speculation regarding Jaime Munguia’s next fight, and his team have made a surprising move, with Canelo Alvarez’s lifelong trainer and manager Eddy Reynoso revealing he is now training the Tijuana native.

Jaime Munguia Teams up With Canelo’s Trainer

Munguia lost to Canelo on May 4, 2024, and a mere nine months later, it appears Munguia has decided to join his fellow Mexican, with Eddy Reynoso announcing he was now working with Munguia: “Yes, right now we’re working,”Reynoso said in Spanish to Azteca TV.

“We’ve been working with him for a week. We met with Mr. Fernando Beltran, with Munguia and his dad to see if we canwork with him. And now we’re here getting to know each other and seeing what he likes to work on and seeing the different points of view. I think we can have a very good partnership.”

Clarifying if Munguia and Alvarez had crossed paths in training: “No, not yet,” said Reynoso.

“Saul is barely getting started on physical training. Jaime already started to loosen up in the gym and work on some technical things. They haven’t run into each other.”

Munguia’s Future

The change in Munguia’s corner is a direct response to the shocking loss against Surace. The 28-year-old had previously trained under Erik Morales before switching to Hall of Fame coach Freddie Roach. However, after losing to Canelo, he returned to Morales, citing a preference for training in the high-altitude conditions of Big Bear, California.

The Ring Magazine previously reported that Munguía vs. Surace 2 was targeted for April 12 in Mexico. It now appears that the rematch remains the priority for the Tijuana native as he looks to get his career back on track.

Munguia earned widespread praise for his brave performance against Canelo and his active 2024 campaign before the setback against Surace. However, 2025 now demands a career rescue mission—one that has begun with his move to Reynoso.
